Inpatient Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

In consultation with the attending Psychiatrist, the Psychiatric NP will provide evaluation, brief treatment, and medication management for patients with psychiatric disorders (who may also have co-occurring substance use and/or medical conditions) requiring an inpatient level of care. The NP is one of two lead providers on the unit, directing care with nursing, social work, and mental health assistant staff. As a provider in a large continuum of Behavioral Health services, including a range of outpatient step‑down programs, the Inpatient Nurse Practitioner will work closely with the treatment team to determine appropriate discharge and level of care.

Applicant will have experience treating patients in an acute setting and have a good understanding of co‑occurring conditions. Reports to Medical Director of Inpatient Services.

I. Major Responsibilities
  • Ability to establish working relationships with other human service providers
  • Fully prepared to present a patient care case in court
  • Conducts Mental health evaluations on all medical floors/ emergency care center as needed, and provides appropriate care interventions
  • Works with the treatment team to analyze and interpret observations of patient’s behavior with information gathered about patient

  • Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
  • Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
  • Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
  • Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
II. Position Qualifications

All responsibilities are essential job functions.

License/Certification/Education

Required:

  • Graduation from an accredited graduate program in psychiatric nursing
  • Massachusetts censure as an advanced practice nurse
  • Board certified as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Association and recognized to practice in an expanded role by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing
Experience/Skills

Required:

  • Minimum of three years advanced clinical practice in psychiatric nursing.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
