Fiber Optic Assembly Technician

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Fiber Optic Assembly Technician to join our manufacturing team. In this role, you will support the assembly of advanced fiber optic products and prototypes, contributing to both production and engineering initiatives. The position requires expertise in fiber preparation, ribbonization, fusion splicing, connector termination, and optical inspection. The ideal candidate will demonstrate precision, manual dexterity, and experience working with bare optical fibers in a fast-paced laboratory or manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare optical fibers for assembly, including coating removal, cleaning, stripping, and cleaving.
  • Create and secure fiber ribbons using ribbonization fixtures and materials.
  • Perform single-fiber and mass fusion splicing using advanced fusion splicing equipment.
  • Execute connector termination and inspect assemblies for quality and workmanship.
  • Inspect fiber end faces, splice quality, and assembly integrity using microscopes and specialized inspection tools.
  • Measure and document splice loss, fiber identification, and process traceability.
  • Follow established work instructions, process documentation, and strict quality control procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, adhering to all safety requirements for optical fibers and chemicals.
  • Support prototype builds, qualification samples, process improvements, and development projects.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams on process optimization, fixture validation, troubleshooting, and yield improvements.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience in fiber optic assembly, cable assembly, or a related field.
  • Skilled in fiber ribbonizing, stripping, cleaving, and fusion splicing processes.
  • Proven ability to handle delicate optical fibers and high-density assemblies with precision.
  • Proficient in the use of optical microscopes, inspection instruments, and fine hand tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written technical procedures.
  • Effective documentation and record-keeping skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience operating mass fusion splicers (Sumitomo, Fujikura, AFL, or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with MPO or other multi-fiber connector platforms.
  • Knowledge of single-mode, ribbon, and specialty optical fiber types.
  • Background supporting prototype builds or working in R&D environments.
  • Understanding of insertion loss testing, ferrule end-face inspection, and optical assembly industry standards.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to perform precise assembly tasks under a microscope for extended periods.
  • Capacity to handle small and delicate components reliably.
  • Full color vision required for fiber identification and inspection.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
