Child and Adult Counselor

Department: Client Services Program

Reports to: Manager of Advocacy Counseling Services

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Effective Date: (not provided)

Pay Rate: $49, per year ($ per hour)

Position Overview

Child and Adult Counselor serves all clients (adult and child) impacted directly or indirectly by domestic and sexual violence. Provides comprehensive evaluations and establishes plans to facilitate healing and recovery. Provides family, individual, and group therapy and monitors counseling outcomes, 50% of the time for victims of sexual assault and 50% for victims of domestic violence.

Hours

Sunday – Off, Monday/Tuesday – 10:30 am–7:30 pm, Wednesday 9 am–6 pm, Thursday 8:30 am–5:30 pm, Friday 8:30 am/3:00 pm, Saturday – Off.

40 hours weekly or as necessary to achieve program objectives and document outcome measures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide direct services through family, individual, and group counseling sessions.
  • Develop and update counseling plans by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing assessment data and victimization history to promote client healing and empowerment.
  • Maintain client confidentiality.
  • Attend and actively participate in agency awareness events, inter‑agency coalitions, and networking groups.
  • Serve within the on‑call rotation schedule to accompany police, hospitals, and/or courts.
  • Maintain and increase job knowledge through educational opportunities, professional publications, personal networks, and professional organizations.
  • Answer the 24‑hour Crisis Hotline and provide information, referrals, safe shelter, and other appropriate options for victims.
  • Provide training to volunteers and the public on family and sexual violence education.
  • Assist with supervising volunteers/interns and their facilitation of support groups and counseling services.
  • Perform all other duties assigned.
Qualifications
  • Prior experience working with children, youth, and adults who have experienced trauma.
  • Licensure is preferred but not required.
  • Bilingual is preferred but not required.
Education and Other Requirements
  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Sociology, or Psychology.
  • Must pass a criminal background check, motor vehicle report, and reference checks.
  • Must have a clean driving record, automobile insurance coverage, be insurable and have at least three years of verifiable driving experience.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move a minimum of 40 lbs for extended distance.
  • Ability to be on location to on‑call status areas within 45 minutes.
Job‑Specific Competencies
  • Competently analyze and prioritize information to develop appropriate therapeutic counseling plans.
  • Communicate openly and effectively, both orally and written.
  • Ability to motivate, inspire, and gain the respect of clients served.
  • Sensitivity regarding issues of family violence and sexual assault and the ability to remain calm in crises.
