Job Summary

The aide/early childhood classroom assistant teacher (ECCAT) is assigned to a Pre‑K or Kindergarten classroom. The aide assists the teacher(s) in implementing the instructional program, working directly with children in small groups or one‑to‑one, establishing rapport, and motivating students. The aide may also assist with transportation duties, supervising students on the school bus.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Assist teacher(s) with planning, preparation, and distribution of classroom materials.
  • Conduct learning games with students according to established procedures.
  • Maintain regular attendance and comply with State Law and County policies.
  • Maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Anticipate and effectively address unforeseen crises associated with working with large groups of children.
  • Assist with supervision and instruction of children, including copying, cutting, coloring, and constructing materials and bulletin boards.
  • Provide individualized and small‑group instruction to reinforce skills taught by the teacher.
  • Assist in implementing lessons based on district and school objectives and student needs.
  • Assist with supervision of student passengers on buses and maintain a safe traveling environment, if assigned to transportation duties.
  • Attend in‑services and workshops as directed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and unquestionable integrity.
  • Assist in supervision of children in various school locations, including instructional areas, cafeteria, and bus.
  • Participate in bus duty, hall monitoring, lunchroom duty, playground duty.
  • Maintain positive work habits and perform duties efficiently and productively.
  • Maintain and/or upgrade skills.
  • Promote and maintain positive pupil‑staff‑community relations.
  • Adhere to employee code of conduct as outlined in Mineral County School’s Policy 4210.
  • Perform duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor(s).
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A‑2‑5.
  • Meet the definition of “Qualifications” in WV Code §18A‑4‑8b; demonstrate competency per WV Code §18A‑4‑8e (state‑approved competency test), as required.
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18‑5‑15c and/or §18A‑3‑10.
  • Hold or qualify for posted classification; hold Early Childhood Classroom Assistant Teacher certification or have the ability to be certified for Early Childhood Classroom Assistant Teacher.
  • Additional coursework is required for all who currently hold Early Childhood Classroom Assistant Teacher authorizations for prekindergarten and kindergarten, permanent or temporary; and for those who do not hold Early Childhood Classroom Assistant Teacher authorization.
  • Successfully complete the current state competency exam for the aide classification pursuant to WV Code §18A‑4‑8e and WV State Board Policy 5202.
  • Ability to facilitate instruction and provide direct and indirect supervision of students under the direction of a professional educator.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, students, staff, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to interface effectively with other school personnel, parents, and business contacts outside Mineral County Schools.
  • Ability to work with children and adults; support academics and behavior management.
  • Ability to demonstrate patience while working with children.
  • Ability to learn new skills, be flexible, and willing to perform a variety of tasks.
  • Ability to work well with others, follow written and oral directions, and complete assigned assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and staff.
  • Self‑motivated and works without direct supervision.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and navigate situations with limited standardization.
