SALARY:
In accordance with the Hancock County Schools salary schedule for professionals, commensurate with experience and degree level.

EVALUATION:
Performance in this position will be evaluated annually by the Superintendent or her designee and in accordance with WV State Code § l SA-2-12, State Board Policy 5310.

General

Job Description

Teachers of special education children are directly responsible to the principal of the school in which they are assigned for routine staff duties. They are directly responsible to the Director of Special Education for the planning and implementing of organizational and program objectives for their students.

Qualifications
  • Hold a valid professional certificate issued by the State Department of Education for West Virginia.
  • Must hold Multi‑Categorical Certification and Autism Certification.
  • Must obtain Severe/Profound certification by end of first semester of the school year.
  • Prior successful teaching experience in special education preferred.
Specific Function and Responsibility

This job requires knowledge of crisis intervention techniques, and the individual will be expected to provide physical services during periods of crisis to foster de‑escalation to minimize the risk of injury to the student, staff, and others and ensure the safety of all individuals in the school. Close supervision is required at all times and involves protecting the student and others across the school setting.

It involves not only supervision in the classroom but also supervision in the hallways, restrooms, and common areas of the school. Supervision and assistance with hygiene, toileting, and intimate needs is required.

Functions and Responsibilities

Special education teachers are responsible for specific curriculum related to individual student needs in addition to the Hancock County Schools core curriculum. This includes the West Virginia Content Standards, the West Virginia Alternate Academic Achievement Standards, and/or Early Learning Standards Framework.

  • Work collaboratively with program counselors to design and implement effective social/emotional behavioral and academic programs.
  • Use a variety of positive behavior intervention strategies and appropriate alternative behavior to meet the individual needs of the child.
  • Apply and implement principles of positive behavior support, differentiated instruction, and Response to Intervention.
  • Co‑teach and/or collaborate with other professional staff.
  • Provide a daily effective program addressing emotional needs, social skill building, and assist in the behavior change process.
  • Maintain accurate, compliant, and timely records in both electronic and paper forms as required.
  • Assess and report student progress using formative, summative, and benchmark assessments.
  • Foster a classroom climate conducive to learning.
  • Utilize instructional management systems which increase student learning and maximize time on task.
  • Monitor and report student progress toward learning outcomes.
  • Utilize a variety of technology to support individual student and classroom needs.
  • Maintain and upgrade professional skills and teaching techniques.
  • Promote and maintain positive student‑teacher‑parent relationships.
  • Maintain a professional work habits, attitudes, and appearance.

Must be willing to be trained and/or certified in:

  • Non‑Crisis Intervention Techniques
  • Emotional, behavioral, sensory and developmental disabilities
  • Sensory Integration
  • Other relevant methods and strategies
