FLSA STATUS: Exempt
SALARY: In accordance with the Pocahontas County Schools substitute salary schedule. See pocahontascountysc for current rates and benefits information, if applicable.
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: As needed during the school year in accordance with West Virginia Code and county staffing needs.
JOB DESCRIPTIONPursuant to WV Code §18A-1-1, a substitute teacher serves in place of the regularly assigned teacher and is responsible for maintaining continuity of instruction and supervision during the teacher's absence. The substitute teacher provides a safe, orderly, and productive learning environment while implementing lesson plans, instructional activities, and classroom procedures established by the regular teacher.
The substitute teacher performs duties consistent with the expectations of a professional educator as defined by West Virginia Code, West Virginia Board of Education policy, and Pocahontas County Board of Education policy. The substitute teacher may be assigned to any grade level or content area consistent with the employee's certification, authorization, and district needs.
QUALIFICATIONS- High school diploma, bachelor's degree, or other qualifications as required for the applicable West Virginia substitute permit, authorization, or teaching certificate.
- Valid West Virginia Substitute Teaching Permit, Short-Term Substitute Permit, Long-Term Substitute Permit, Professional Teaching Certificate, or other credential appropriate for the assignment.
- Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18A-3-10.
- Applicants who have recent unsatisfactory evaluations will not be considered eligible for consideration.
- Applicants who demonstrate unsatisfactory interview performance are not eligible for consideration.
- Applicants who receive unfavorable reference recommendations will not be eligible for consideration.
- Applicants who have been dismissed or who have had their contracts non-renewed for cause by another school district are not eligible for consideration.
- Demonstrating Knowledge: Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively carry out instructional plans, classroom routines, and assigned responsibilities.
- Implementing Instructional Plans: Follows lesson plans, schedules, and instructional activities provided by the regular teacher to maintain continuity of instruction.
- Understanding Students: Demonstrates awareness of student needs and follows accommodations, modifications, behavior plans, health plans, and other documented supports as provided.
- Maintaining Records: Completes attendance, required documentation, and reports as directed by the school or regular teacher.
- Creating a Respectful Culture: Establishes and maintains a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment conducive to student success.
- Managing Student Behavior: Maintains classroom expectations and implements established classroom management procedures to promote appropriate student behavior.
- Organizing the Learning Environment: Maintains an orderly classroom environment and ensures instructional materials and resources are used appropriately.
- Ensuring Safety: Implements and enforces school safety procedures and responds appropriately to emergencies and safety concerns.
