Nature of Work

This position is responsible for overseeing the daily operation and supervision of the staff of the State Asbestos Compliance Program. Supervising, assigning and reviewing the work of staff performing technical and environmental field inspections related to the Asbestos Compliance Program. Oversee the development and manage the annual U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Toxic Substances Control/Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA-asbestos in schools K-12) grant.

Routine interface with federal, state, local, county officials, contractors and the public providing information on matters related to asbestos exposure and abatement. Cross train in other Division environmental programs (lead, radon, clandestine drug lab remediation) and act as a team member for the Beaver Valley Power Station responses.

Training:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in natural or applied science, engineering, or occupational safety and health.

Substitution:
Full-time or equivalent part-time paid inspection, technical, or professional employment in one of the areas of assignment may substitute for the required training on a year-for-year basis.

Experience:

Four years of full-time or equivalent part-time professional, supervisory, or administrative employment in the field of environmental inspection or environmental compliance in one of the areas of assignment.

Substitution: A Master's Degree in natural or applied science, engineering, or occupational safety and health, may substitute for one year of experience.

Special Requirements:
Must possess a valid driver's license. For work in the area of hazardous waste management and solid waste management, must take and pass a physical examination during the first six months of employment and submit to annual follow-up examinations. Failure to pass the initial examination will result in termination of employment. Failure to pass a subsequent examination may result in reassignment.

Note:

Personnel engaged in activities associated with hazardous wastes risk exposure to situations or chemicals which may cause illness or injury if proper procedures are not followed.
