The mission of the WV Office of the Insurance Commissioner is to promote a competitive and solvent insurance market with adequate consumer protection by fairly and consistently administering the insurance laws of West Virginia.
Responsibilities- Serve as the General Counsel for the agency, providing legal advice to the executive team and others regarding applicable statutes, rules, and regulations.
- Perform advanced legal research, prepare memorandums and briefs on complex insurance issues, draft bills and rules, and other related documents.
- Analyze and summarize laws from other states related to insurance issues pending the state of West Virginia.
- Represent the agency in matters before the Legislature and testify before legislative committees, collaborating with committee counsel on bills and study topics.
- Correspond with legislators and the public as needed when inquiries are received.
- Manage all outside litigation and personnel matters before administrative bodies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Training: Admission to practice law in the State of West Virginia.
- Experience: Nine years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in the practice of law, including trial experience in administrative or judicial proceedings.
- Substitution: One year of full-time or equivalent part-time paid employment as an attorney with the agency to which assigned shall be considered the equivalent of two years of other qualifying experience.
- Holidays – Minimum of 12 paid holidays
- Leave Accrual – Ample annual (starting at 4.61 hours per pay period) and sick leave (5.55 hours per pay period) accrual
- Medical Insurance – Insurance through Public Employees Insurance Agency (PEIA) with several plan options and flexible benefits through Mountaineer Flex Benefits to cover additional needs
- Life Insurance – Free $10,000 basic life insurance and additional life insurance offered at a low cost to you
- Retirement – Mandatory retirement where the employee contributes a portion of salary and the employer also contributes, with an optional 457 deferred compensation retirement plan
