Nurse Staffing Coordinator (Psychiatric/Forensic Care)
We are looking for a seasoned psychiatric nurse with leadership skills and a passion for clinical excellence. The Coordinator is the heartbeat of our facility, ensuring that patients receive the highest quality of care by empowering staff and maintaining precise staffing at the right time.
Benefits: appointment incentive of $13,500 for applicants who agree to a minimum 12‑month commitment.
Responsibilities- Ensure every unit, on every shift, is fully equipped with qualified staff to provide world‑class care and well‑being.
- Assess nursing care delivery in real time, identify growth opportunities, and collaborate with the team to implement best practices.
- Act as a stabilizing force during behavioral emergencies, ensuring safety for patients and staff.
- Coordinate, schedule, and organize work activities across the hospital, ensuring seamless shift transitions.
- Serve as a mentor to nursing personnel, fostering professional development and high‑quality outcomes.
- Manage 24/7 coverage to protect nurses from burnout and guarantee continuous patient support.
- Act as the primary supervisor of nursing personnel in the Nurse Manager’s absence.
- Keep the Chief Nurse Officer (CNO) and Nurse Managers informed of critical unit issues through clear and timely reporting.
- Apply expert knowledge of hospital regulations and coordinate the hospital‑wide Adult Protective Services (APS) policy.
- Lead the response to behavioral emergencies, demonstrating and teaching advanced de‑escalation techniques.
- Oversee the delivery of psychiatric and medical nursing services to ensure protocols are strictly followed.
- Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives and collaborate across departments.
- Act as a bridge between the facility, families, and outside organizations.
- Direct unit personnel training and promote continuing nursing education.
- Ensure seamless flow of information between unit staff and other departments.
- Teach healthcare professionals psychological and physical tools for managing complex psychiatric behaviors.
- Mandatory overtime may be required.
- Must successfully complete a background check and a comprehensive drug/alcohol screening (urinalysis and breath analysis).
- Applicants must be 100% tobacco‑free facility compliant.
- Current West Virginia licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
- Four (4) years of full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid experience as an RN.
- Internal applicants must have three (3) years of full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid RN experience and/or a specialty nursing role (e.g., Charge Nurse, Infection Control Nurse, QAPI Nurse).
- Graduate coursework toward a nursing degree may substitute for required experience on a year‑for‑year basis per the Office of Shared Administration Equivalency Chart.
- Strong foundational nursing skills with advanced training in acute and chronic mental health conditions.
- Ability to stay calm and direct activities during high‑pressure situations or behavioral crises.
- Administrative competence in scheduling and evaluating unit activities.
William R. Sharpe, Jr. Hospital, located in Weston, West Virginia, is a 200‑bed acute psychiatric care facility owned and operated by the West Virginia Department of Health Facilities. The hospital holds accreditation from The Joint Commission and certification from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Services are provided to patients committed through civil commitment or forensic orders, with collaboration from West Virginia University’s Department of Behavioral Medicine & Psychiatry for community transition.
