Must have 2 years of Stepdown/PCU experience. Must be comfortable with cardiac monitoring and cardiac drips.

Description:

50 bed unit with nurse to patient ratios of 1:4-6 depending on acuity. Common patient diagnoses include cardiac patients, post pneumonia, post cath lab, seizures, and ETOH. CIWA protocols, pacemakers, and other related skills are required. RNs are required to titrate drips such as cardizem, amiodarone, nitroglycerin, heparin, dopamine, dobutamine, and angiomax. A charge nurse is present on each shift. Day shift charge nurses typically do not take a patient assignment unless necessary.

Night shift charge nurses will take a lighter patient assignment. Patient care techs are available on the unit to assist with activities of daily living, vitals, bathing, toileting, and feeding. Hospitalist or intensivist coverage is available 24/7, with a primary attending on call piratory therapy is available 24/7 and is responsible for administering breathing treatments and managing respiratory equipment. RNs are expected to troubleshoot respiratory equipment as needed.

Monitor techs are available 24/7, and nurses are expected to read and interpret telemetry. RNs must print strips, perform measurements, and identify rhythms. Shifts typically run 7 AM to 7 PM or 6:45 AM to 7:15 AM for days. Staff are allowed to create their preferred schedules, though nothing is finalized until the schedule is completed. Weekend requirements include working every other weekend.

Holiday rotation may be required. Travelers can float to any inpatient unit, with priority given to travelers. Scrub color/dress code is navy blue. Unit-specific orientation includes two days of general orientation and one day with a preceptor. The charting system used is Cerner. A BSN is not required. This position is within an acute care setting.
