Position SummaryThe Van Driver is responsible for safely transporting clients of the behavioral health clinic to and from appointments, treatment programs, and other designated locations. This individual plays an important role in supporting access to care by ensuring timely, respectful, and safe transportation services. The Van Driver interacts directly with clients and must demonstrate compassion, professionalism, and awareness of the unique needs of individuals receiving behavioral health and/or substance use treatment.
Key Responsibilities- Operate agency vehicles to transport clients to and from the clinic, appointments, or community-based services in a safe and timely manner.
- Maintain a professional, courteous, and supportive attitude with all clients, families, and staff.
- Adhere to daily transportation schedules and communicate effectively with the dispatcher or supervisor about changes, delays, or concerns.
- Perform and document daily vehicle safety checks, including fuel levels, tire pressure, lights, and brakes.
- Ensure vehicle cleanliness, both interior and exterior, and report maintenance or repair needs promptly.
- Maintain accurate logs of mileage, passenger counts, destinations, and any incidents or accidents.
- Follow all agency safety procedures, including use of seat belts, assisting clients in and out of vehicles as needed, and ensuring adherence to transportation policies.
- Comply with all local, state, and federal driving laws, including agency policies regarding confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
- Respond calmly and appropriately in case of emergencies or behavioral health crises while on transport, following proper protocol.
- Assist staff with additional transportation-related tasks as assigned.
- Comply with federal, state and company policies, procedures and regulations.
- Maintain confidentiality of all information and comply with HIPAA regulations.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and support Westbrook Health Services mission, vision, values, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards and code of ethical behavior.
Education: High school diploma or GED required.
Licensure: Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; CDL with passenger endorsement preferred but not required (depending on vehicle size).
Experience: Prior experience working with individuals with mental health or substance use disorders is preferred.
At least one year of driving experience in a professional setting is desirable.

- Ability to safely operate a van or similar-sized vehicle in urban and rural settings.
- Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and a respectful demeanor toward all clients.
- Ability to follow schedules and communicate effectively with supervisors.
- Understanding of confidentiality requirements and professional boundaries.
- Dependability and punctuality are essential.
This role requires the ability to sit for extended periods while driving and the physical capability to assist clients entering or exiting the vehicle. Must be able to bend, reach, lift up to 30 pounds, and navigate stairs if needed. Exposure to varying weather conditions may occur. Drivers must be alert, responsive, and able to respond appropriately to traffic and behavioral situations during transportation.
