Bus Operator – After School Program (Summersville Elementary)

Location: Nicholas County BOE Transportation/Maintenance

Salary /

Terms:

Daily rate of pay per Nicholas County Schools pay scale. Monday through Thursday 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm for the  school year. Paid for actual days worked.

Classification: Service

Reports to: Director of Transportation

Evaluation: Evaluated annually by the building principal/immediate supervisor in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5314 and NCBOE Policy 4220.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Summary

Bus Operator is employed to operate school buses and other school transportation vehicles as per state board regulations. Performance in this position will be evaluated annually by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with the specified policies.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Perform all duties outlined in West Virginia State Board of Education Policy 4336 and Nicholas County Board of Education Policies.
  • Maintain positive work habits.
  • Serve as a role model for students in conduct, ethical principles, and democratic values.
  • Interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and demonstrate essential personal qualities including reliable communication skills.
  • Create a positive working environment and cooperate with students, peers, other school personnel, parents, and the community.
  • Maintain regular attendance and comply with state and county policies and regulations.
  • Perform duties efficiently and productively.
  • Work safely using proper body mechanics and lifting techniques to reduce injury risk.
  • Obtain and maintain a West Virginia CDL license with passenger and school bus endorsements.
  • Successfully complete the West Virginia School Bus Safety program and pass requisite online certification and skills tests.
  • Maintain valid CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Pass a physical examination and drug and alcohol screening as defined by federal regulations.
  • Perform pre‑post inspections pursuant to WVDE Policy 4336.
  • Conduct safety evacuation drills pursuant to WVDE Policy 4336.
  • Maintain an accurate and efficient morning and evening route schedule and student rosters.
  • Operate the bus safely and obey all laws.
  • Use the fire extinguisher safely.
  • Assist and supervise students with disabilities.
  • Assist ill students and clean up from student sickness accidents.
  • Communicate with students, parents, school officials, and supervisors.
  • Mop and clean inside and outside of the vehicle.
  • Complete all required paperwork within prescribed timelines.
  • Secure wheelchairs as needed.
  • Install snow chains on vehicles as directed.
  • Remove obstructions from windshield and under wiper blades.
  • Adjust all outside mirrors.
  • Report mechanical malfunctions for repair immediately.
  • Monitor and ensure fluid levels are within prescribed measures.
  • Report works‑related problems professionally using proper channels and allow for timely resolution.
  • Maintain and upgrade skills.
Qualifications

As per West Virginia School Transportation Regulations.

The employee shall remain free of alcohol or non‑prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances affecting productivity, safety, or judgment will not be tolerated.

Staff members serve as role models for students in conduct and responsibility and have a legal responsibility to help instill in students ethical principles and democratic values.

Route Details

The route will include the Summersville area and will be determined based on enrollment, need, and student participation. Routes and stops will be determined by the site coordinator and transportation director.

Physical Demands

The position requires frequent stooping, reaching overhead, standing, walking, lifting, pulling, pushing, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. The employee may lift and move at least 50 pounds, or 100 pounds on a special education bus.

Specific vision abilities include distance vision to read road signs, near vision to monitor instruments, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Exposure to extreme temperatures from below freezing to occasionally 90°F during warmer months. Noise level moderate to loud (60‑90 dB).

The job requires a five‑day workweek with a split shift and may involve heavy traffic and stressful conditions.
