Route Details:
The route will include the Summersville area and is to be determined based on enrollment, need, and student participation. The routes and stops will be determined by the site coordinator and transportation director.
Bus Operator is a person employed to operate school buses and other school transportation vehicles as provided by the state board. Performance in this position will be evaluated annually by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code, WV State Board Policy, and Nicholas County Board of Education Policy.
Key Responsibilities- Perform all duties outlined in West Virginia State Board of Education Policy 4336 and Nicholas County Board of Education Policies.
- Maintain positive work habits and a positive attitude.
- Serve as a role model for students, helping them conduct themselves as citizens and responsible, intelligent human beings, and instilling ethical principles and democratic values.
- Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Maintain a positive working environment and cooperate with students, peers, other school personnel, parents, and the community.
- Maintain regular attendance and comply with state and county policies and regulations.
- Perform duties efficiently and productively, working safely using proper body mechanics and lifting techniques to reduce injury risk.
- Obtain and maintain a West Virginia CDL license with passenger and school bus endorsements.
- Successfully complete the West Virginia School Bus Safety program and pass the requisite online certification and skills tests.
- Maintain valid CPR and First Aid certification.
- Pass a physical examination from a Medical Examiner as defined by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, as well as drug and alcohol screening.
- Perform pre- and post-inspections pursuant to WVDE Policy 4336, and conduct safety evacuation drills pursuant to the same policy.
- Maintain an accurate morning and evening route schedule and student rosters.
- Operate the bus safely, obey all laws, and use fire extinguisher when necessary.
- Assist and supervise students with disabilities and assist ill students, cleaning up after sickness accidents.
- Communicate with students, parents, school officials, and supervisors.
- Mop and clean inside and outside of the vehicle.
- Complete all required paperwork within prescribed timelines.
- Secure wheelchairs as needed.
- Install snow chains on vehicles as directed.
- Remove obstructions from windshield and wiper blades, adjust all outside mirrors.
- Report mechanical malfunctions for repair immediately, monitor fluid levels, and report work-related problems in a professional manner using proper channels.
- Maintain and/or upgrade skills.
- Perform all other duties and responsibilities as set forth in Nicholas County Board of Education Policy and as directed by the immediate supervisor, building principal, Transportation Director, or Superintendent.
- Compliance with West Virginia School Transportation Regulations.
- The ability to perform the job duties and responsibilities as contained in the Job Description.
- Clear alcohol and controlled substance policy:
No alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while on the job; drug and alcohol screening required.
The physical demands include frequent stooping, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, pulling, pushing, and repetitive motions. Employees may lift and move at least 50 pounds (up to 100 pounds on a special education bus). Vision requirements include distant and near vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The work environment may involve extreme temperatures ranging from below freezing to 90F, and noise levels between 60 and 90 dB.
The role involves a split shift with time off between runs.
