Job Summary
Bus Operator is a person employed to operate school buses and other school transportation vehicles as provided by the state board. Performance is evaluated annually by the building principal or immediate supervisor in accordance with WV State Code, WV State Board Policy, and Nicholas County Board of Education Policy.
Salary / TermsDaily rate of pay per Nicholas County Schools pay scale. Monday through Thursday 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm for the school year. Paid for actual days worked.
Units and LocationAssigned route will include the Richwood area; routes and stops are determined by the site coordinator and transportation director.

Responsibilities- Perform all duties outlined in West Virginia State Board of Education Policy 4336 and Nicholas County Board of Education policies.
- Maintain positive work habits, a constructive attitude, and cooperate with students, peers, school personnel, parents, and the community.
- Follow safety procedures: conduct safety evacuation drills; perform pre- and post-inspection of vehicles; use fire extinguishers; secure wheelchairs; assist students with disabilities and ill students.
- Operate the bus safely, obey all laws, and maintain an accurate and efficient route schedule and student rosters.
- Clean the vehicle, mop inside and outside, and maintain proper cleanliness.
- Adhere to all required paperwork deadlines.
- Maintain a West Virginia CDL license with passenger and school bus endorsements.
- Complete the West Virginia School Bus Safety program and requisite online certification and skill tests.
- Maintain valid CPR and First Aid certification.
- Pass a physical examination and drug/alcohol screen as required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
- Report mechanical malfunctions promptly and monitor fluid levels.
- Install snow chains, remove obstructions, and adjust outside mirrors.
- Perform additional duties as directed by the transportation director, building principal, or superintendent of schools.
- Meet all requirements of the West Virginia School Transportation Regulations.
- Show the ability to perform the job duties and responsibilities as described.
- Remain free of alcohol or non‑prescribed drugs while at work.
The job requires frequent stooping, reaching overhead, standing, walking, lifting, and repetitive motions. Employees may need to lift and move up to 50 pounds; special education buses may require 100 pounds. The role also involves exposure to extreme temperatures and moderate to loud noise levels (60-90 dB).
