The Opportunity

Working under the supervision of a Police Sergeant, the Community Service Officer (CSO) serves in an unarmed, uniformed security position. The CSO is based in the Public Safety Department Communications Center, functioning as a call taker and dispatcher. The role may also include patrolling the campus on foot or in a vehicle, issuing parking tickets, performing walking or mobile escorts, and supporting various public safety functions.

What

You Will Do

As a dispatcher in the Public Safety Department’s Communications Center you will:

  • Receive emergency calls, determine the nature and location of incidents, and dispatch police, fire, and emergency medical services using radio, telephone, and computer systems.
  • Operate complex dispatch software, coordinate communications, relay information between responders, and provide pre‑arrival instructions.
  • Maintain detailed records and operate in high‑stress, shift‑based environments.
  • Perform parking enforcement, foot and mobile escorts, and contribute to a safe environment at special campus events.
  • Unlock and lock campus buildings daily and patrol the campus on foot or in a vehicle in an unarmed, uniformed capacity.
  • Maintain radio communications with police, assign tasks to officers, and coordinate with local police and fire departments.
  • Answer routine business and emergency phone calls and operate access control, alarm, and CCTV systems.
  • Engage with the Babson College Community through community outreach, crime prevention programming, and training of staff as needed.
  • Assist with additional assignments and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • 1–3 years of work experience in a service industry.
  • Hepatitis B vaccination and OSHA‑compliant training; must maintain certification.
  • Active CPR certification (or completion upon hire).
  • Knowledge of modern public safety, police practices, and community policing principles.
  • Strong human relations, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze situations, maintain radio communications, and enter and maintain records.
  • Commitment to the mission of providing law enforcement and security services in a multicultural community.
  • Knowledge of problem‑solving methods and familiarity with various campus department procedures.
  • Background in security, health and safety, or emergency medical experience is recommended.
How and Where You Will Work
  • Flexible hours, schedules, and overtime assignments, including time for virtual or in‑person training, special projects, and community engagement.
  • Regular physical exertion and walking required; ability to travel on and off campus.
  • Valid unrestricted U.S. driver’s license for one year; must maintain a satisfactory driving record and complete the college vehicle training program within the first 60 days.
  • Position designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act.
Additional Skills You May Have
  • Good mental and physical condition.
  • Prior security or dispatching experience (especially in a college or university police department) preferred.
  • Experience in a higher education setting preferred.
Pay and Benefits

This non‑exempt position offers an hourly rate of $27.46, with eligibility for performance‑based bonuses. Babson College provides a comprehensive benefits package for full‑time employees working at least 28 hours per week, including:
