Job Overview

Maintains, inspects, operates, and repairs building HVAC and refrigeration systems, hot water (gas, electric, and oil fired) systems and components at Babson College. Adjusts those systems as necessary for optimal performance to maintain compliance with state/local building and heating/cooling codes and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate, adjust, and inspect all buildings HVAC and refrigeration systems and auxiliary equipment and components.
  • Detect hazards, malfunctions, and need for adjustment or replacement of controls, thermostats, and related equipment.
  • Maintain HVAC, refrigeration systems, auxiliary equipment and components such as cooling towers, pumps, ducts, fans, etc.
  • Repair or replace faulty HVAC, refrigeration equipment, motors, controls, valves, towers, dampers, regulators, gaskets, flanges, seals, pumps, draft fans, compressors, and related systems such as chilled water or condenser water loops.
  • Document all repairs, maintenance, and comments on assigned service order work slips; record routine equipment readings, responses to alarms, maintenance performed, and other pertinent information in applicable equipment logs and databases.
  • Collaborate with in‑house technicians and contractors to keep all systems in like‑new condition; recommend repairs or alternative treatments to heating, cooling, or refrigeration systems.
  • Respond to and correct deficiencies identified in service order work slips, execute new or modified installations to minimize material waste, provide future maintenance access, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, or unreliable repairs while meeting manufacturer specifications and local code requirements.
  • Assist other department trade group members in completing work tasks; provide appropriate support for major campus events such as commencement and opening of school.
  • Participate in snow removal activities to maintain campus operations.
Required Education and Skills
  • 2–3 years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent technical school certification.
  • Certification for reclaiming refrigerants from a technical school or program.
  • Valid Massachusetts Refrigeration license.
  • Valid unrestricted U.S. driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of the Babson College vehicle training program within the first 30–60 days of employment.
  • Attend safety training as required by Management.
How and Where You Will Work

Must function well in a team/community environment and frequently interact with students, teachers, co‑workers, and administrators.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, MSDS, mechanical drawings, operating, maintenance, repair, installation, and procedure instructions or manuals; write routine instructions; fill out equipment logs; describe equipment problems and solutions; speak effectively about mechanical and plumbing systems; apply common sense; order replacement parts; and manage daily work tasks.

Physical Environment
  • Regularly exposed to wet/humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, precarious places, hazardous chemicals, outside weather, extreme heat, fumes, airborne particles, and moderate noise.
  • Regularly required to work extended hours and participate in an after‑hours emergency call‑back program.
Physical Demands
  • Operates a motor vehicle daily; uses hands for various tasks; frequently stands, walks, reaches, talks, hears, and smells; occasionally sits.
  • Regularly lifts up to 25 lbs; frequently lifts up to 50 lbs; occasionally lifts up to 100 lbs.
  • Regularly climbs/balances up to 10 ft; frequently climbs or balances up to 25 ft.
  • Requires good close, color, depth perception, and visual focus ability.
Additional Experience, Skills & Abilities
  • Four to six years of related experience; knowledge of controls.
  • Certification for reclaiming refrigerants;
    Massachusetts Refrigeration license or acceptable equivalent; recommendation by supervisor; acceptable background check; no documented disciplinary actions for past two years.
Position Details

Monday–Friday, 7:00am–3:30pm. Hourly rate: $44.58 (post probation). Includes paid sick leave where required by law, in accordance with applicable state and local regulations.
