MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB: The technician is responsible for carrying out all work to a high standard within this busy workshop facility, ensuring adherence to vehicle maintenance and compliance regulations. The role will involve ensuring that all paperwork and fleet management system is completed timely, accurately and to a high standard, and carrying out repairs, maintenance, servicing to vehicles as and when required, whilst adhering to all health and safety policies and procedures.

The role will involve ensuring that all paperwork and fleet management system is completed timely, accurately and to a high standard, and carrying out repairs, maintenance, servicing to vehicles as and when required, whilst adhering to all health and safety policies and procedures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES /

ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Carry out vehicle inspection examinations in line with VOSA procedure and company policy.
  • Test and check that systems and components are safe, secure and working properly.
  • Diagnose faults by isolating systems or components that may have caused or potentially cause a problem.
  • Repair or replace worn parts ahead of the vehicle’s breakdown or damage.
  • Gain authorisation to repair or fit parts as required by company procedure.
  • Maintain efficiency and accuracy while working.
  • Test drive vehicles where permitted and correct driving licence is held.
  • Use personal protective equipment as and when required, securing the safety of yourself and all personnel.
  • Complete all paperwork required for the task/job completed and return this documentation to the workshop controller immediately on completion of the inspection/work.
  • Assist other technicians with repairs when required, and complete the workshop controller’s duties when required.
  • Demonstrate a duty of care by reporting any health and safety concerns to workshop controller immediately upon recognition of potential hazard.
  • Complete jobs in full before the end of your shift or carry out job handover as required, ensuring the vehicle is left in a safe condition with necessary safety signage present.
  • Maintain flexibility to provide adequate cover to serve customers and workshop requirements.
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures including the SFS health and safety policies at all times.
  • Keep the workshop and parking area clean and tidy, ensuring customer/SFS vehicles are parked efficiently and walkways are kept clear; all vehicles when parked outside must be locked and keys kept secure.
  • Ensure all equipment used is safe and returned to correct storage after use; report any failures to the workshop controller.
  • Provide early morning and/or afternoon defect cover on customer sites.
  • Attend vehicle breakdowns as and when required (a workshop vehicle/van will be provided).
  • Ensure that no vehicle is returned to the customer unless it is safe to be returned for their use.
  • Create and maintain a professional relationship with SFS staff, customers and suppliers.
  • Be on standby 24/7 on a weekly basis as and when required.
  • Maintain a flexible approach to all work duties, providing adequate cover to service workshop and customer requirements.
  • Perform any reasonable ad‑hoc duty as required.
About You EsE Essential Skills
  • A full clean HGV driving licence category C required as a minimum.
  • At least 5 years’ technical experience on municipal vehicles (e.g. refuse, sweepers, etc).
  • Technical experience on vehicle electrical systems (12+24 volts), hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Evidence of qualifications and training in the following areas: recognised time served on an apprenticeship scheme, VOSA vehicle inspection course, municipal vehicle manufacturing training.
  • Understanding of health & safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
