OPERATOR I ($24.02 -$36.04 PER HOUR)

Job Summary

Performs semi-skilled technical work in water or wastewater treatment for the Village of Wellington (Village). Operates and monitors all treatment equipment. Performs routine maintenance and as needed, assists with equipment repair. Work is performed under general supervision with limited latitude in the use of initiative. Position exercises some judgment in accordance with well-defined policies, procedures, and techniques.

  • Ensures wastewater treatment is compliant with all regulatory standards and refers complex or unusual situations to the Wastewater Operator “A” level or designated supervisor.
  • Monitors various flow and additive rates of wastewater processing, e.g., effluent flow; pH, oxygen, and chemical levels; modifies flow and chemical feed rates to ensure appropriate levels.
  • Monitors various operational aspects of wastewater processing, e.g., chemical use, power consumption, generator use, effluent/waste production, volume processing, equipment maintenance.
  • Collects and performs laboratory sample analysis to ensure adherence to regulatory chemical and additive parameters.
  • Monitors chemical and additive inventory to always ensure appropriate supply/stock levels.
  • Monitors processing equipment to ensure proper operating conditions; performs minor maintenance as necessary to maintain proper operations; performs basic troubleshooting in the event of malfunction and reports results to supervisor for timely resolution.
  • Performs routine general maintenance in and around plant facilities, grounds, and equipment, e.g., transfer belts, presses, screens, fans, storage tanks, workstations.
  • Maintains logs and records regarding plant operation during shift, e.g., flow rates, analysis results, chemical use, volume processing, equipment maintenance.
  • Coordinates with collection and distribution crews on leaks, main breaks, or related critical events; responds to emergency call-in in the event of hurricane or related critical events.
  • Provides training and task related direction to less experienced staff, e.g., equipment operations, rate/flow modifications, chemical/additive parameters.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by one (1) year of directly-related operator experience; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training and/or experience.

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver License and the ability to drive a Village owned vehicle per established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Florida Water/Wastewater Operator’s Certification Class “C” required.

Regular attendance at work on-site is essential to maintain the necessary teamwork, personal interaction, and supervision that this position requires. Responds to emergency call-ins for hurricanes or other critical events.
