Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Performs a range of routine tasks involving the diagnosis and repair of all District aircraft according to manufacturers' specifications and Federal Aviation regulations. Holds a complete FAA Aircraft Mechanic Airframe and Power Plant Certificate and has completed necessary trade school courses. Possesses knowledge of aviation concepts, practices, and procedures and owns basic tools suitable for aircraft maintenance. Performs work under general supervision and may involve responding to mechanical breakdown calls.
Responsibilities- Diagnose and repair aircraft systems in accordance with Federal Aviation regulations.
- Conduct routine maintenance, inspections, and troubleshooting of turbine helicopters, with emphasis on Bell 407 and 206 models.
- Use impact-driven hand tools and power tools to service aircraft components, which may involve contact with carbon monoxide, dusts, waste oils, greases, coolants, acids, adhesives, and solvents.
- Operate in a hangar environment, observing and examining machinery and parts to detect malfunctioning or defective units.
- Respond to mechanical breakdown calls and provide repair services as needed.
- Participate in emergency response duties during major storm or emergency events as required by the District's response role.
- Continuous handling, fingering, reaching, standing, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, and intermittent kneeling to service and repair aircraft components.
- Manual dexterity to maneuver tools and parts in awkward positions, including under dashboards.
- Intermittent lifting of tools and parts weighing 10–20 lbs. and lifting tires, batteries, and cylinder heads weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to manage hand turning activity with manual and power impact wrenches in a noisy environment.
The position generally runs from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with occasional extended or weekend hours and overtime based on job needs, weather, or environmental conditions.
CompensationThe hiring range for this position is $73,652.80 to $95,846.40, depending on education and years of relevant work experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
