Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Fire Chief and/or Captain, the EMT/AEMT/Paramedic provides highly skilled, specialized emergency medical care to the sick and injured. The employee in this position responds to emergency calls, renders medical assistance to the level of the employee's certification, and transports patients to the proper facility.
Essential Functions- Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls calmly, efficiently and promptly;
- Assesses the nature and extent of injury or illness to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed;
- Provides emergency medical treatment, while not exceeding the level of skill, training and certification of the individual employee;
- Completes patient care forms, insurance forms, evaluation forms, and all other forms and reports in a competent and timely fashion;
- Operates ambulances and other department equipment safely and efficiently;
- Rescues and extricates victims of accidents, sudden illness or entrapment using proper rescue and medical techniques;
- Performs triage and a variety of emergency medical treatments and provides continuing care and treatment while enroute to a facility, monitoring and reporting changes in patient condition;
- Under medical direction and following prescribed standing orders performs a variety of invasive and non-invasive therapies including but not limited to assessment and evaluation of the ill and injured, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation, administration of drugs, agents and solutions, pulmonary ventilation, application of dressing and bandages, control of shock, and immobilization of fractures, and all other skills for basics;
- Assists and coordinates with other emergency service agencies in rescue operations, motor vehicle accidents and other emergency situations;
- Communicates with professional medical personnel and treatment facilities to obtain instructions regarding further treatment and/or to arrange reception of patients to the appropriate center;
- Maintains order at scenes, including crowd disbursement and restraint of family and friends;
- Prepares inventories and stocks supplies and inspects equipment for proper operation;
- Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of the department's equipment, apparatus and facilities.
- Attends and participates in required on-duty continuing education for department staff;
- Performs other duties as directed or required.
Experience:
Some experience in the field of emergency medical services is preferred, but not required.
Education/Licenses:
Must have a minimum of either a high school diploma or a GED. Must possess and maintain current Kansas EMT/AEMT/Paramedic certification. Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas Class B drivers license and maintain an insurable driving record.
Technical
Skills:
Knowledge of rescue and emergency medical principles, practices, and techniques. Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine proper course of action. Ability to deal tactfully with other persons and communicate effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing. Ability to function in life/death situations relying on sight, hearing, smell and touch to make critical decisions while maintaining safety of others/self;
acknowledge associated risk of bodily injury/death in performance of duties. Ability to read, understand and adhere to all City and department guidelines, directives, memorandums and policies.
Problem Solving:
Problem solving is a factor in this position. Problems include determining strategies to provide medical care in emergency situations and in, sometimes, hazardous conditions.
Decision-Making:
Decision making is a factor in this position. Decisions include the selection of proper methods and techniques for patient care. Decisions generally follow prescribed policies and procedures, but may occasionally require the use of independent judgement.
Supervision:
Work performance reviewed by the Fire Chief and other supervisory personnel. Employee does not have supervisory responsibilities over subordinate personnel.
Accountability:
Employee is accountable for adhering to privacy and confidentiality requirements relating to patient medical and personal information. Employee is responsible for the efficient use of time and materials. He/she is responsible for reporting any problems immediately to supervisory personnel.
Personal Relations:
Frequent contact with the public and other first responder personnel. Must be courteous and tactful at all times with customers.
Working Conditions:
Working environment may quickly change from an office setting to an indoor acute care clinical setting or to an uncontrolled, unpredictable pre-hospital setting.
