Under the supervision of a licensed and currently registered New York State Registered Nurse, the Graduate Nurse (GN) provides direct patient care and participates in the coordination of total nursing care. This role supports patient and family education, collaborates with the interdisciplinary care team, and practices within established professional nursing standards, hospital policies, and New York State Nurse Practice Act requirements.

The Graduate Nurse functions under a Limited Permit while preparing for RN licensure.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assessment and Care Planning
  • Performs comprehensive patient assessments utilizing knowledge of disease processes, illness, injury, and psychosocial needs
  • Accurately observes, reports, and documents patient condition, behaviors, and responses to care
  • Assists in developing nursing diagnoses, goals, and individualized plans of care based on assessment data and patient priorities
  • Assesses patient and family learning needs and provides age-appropriate education related to disease processes and care plans
  • Participates in discharge planning to support safe, timely transitions of care and appropriate post-discharge services
Implementation of Care
  • Implements nursing care in accordance with hospital policies, nursing standards, and established protocols under RN supervision
  • Collaborates with preceptors, clinical supervisors, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members to deliver coordinated care
  • Safely carries out physician orders, seeking clarification for unfamiliar or questionable orders
  • Administers medications and IV therapies safely and accurately under supervision, demonstrating knowledge of indications, actions, and potential side effects
  • Documents care, interventions, and patient responses accurately in the electronic medical record
  • Practices within the New York State Nurse Practice Act and adheres to ethical and professional nursing standards at all times
Evaluation and Professional Development
  • Evaluates patient responses to nursing interventions and communicates changes in condition to the appropriate licensed provider
  • Participates in quality improvement activities and unit-based evaluations of nursing practice
  • Maintains clinical competencies through orientation, preceptorship, required education, and approved in-service training
  • Demonstrates flexibility in scheduling, including alternate shifts or on-call coverage, as operational needs require
EDUCATION AND LICENSURE
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • New York State Limited Permit to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse required (pending NCLEX results)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Entry-level nursing position; prior clinical rotations or healthcare experience preferred
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prioritize workload and adapt in a fast-paced clinical environment
