Director of Accounting

District Office

8 hours per day/260 days per year

Salary: 97,671 - $128,958

Start Date Information: The current Director of Accounting is retiring at the end of August. We will hire this position with a start date of May 1, 2026, if possible, to allow for cross‑training.

Summary Description: Manage the district accounting, budgeting and internal control systems for all funds. Provide primary user support for scal information within the district.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide technical expertise for the accounting, budget and internal control functions of the district’s nancial operations.
  • Maintain general ledgers for all district funds including:
    General Fund, Transportation Vehicle Fund, Debt Service Fund, Capital Projects Fund and Associated Student Body Fund.
  • Oversee the receipting of all revenue, direct the district accounts receivable process and perform reconciliations to the general ledger.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of policies, procedures and standards for an effective scal management program, accurate nancial statements, and systems of internal control for district office, schools and departments.
  • Manage the grants claiming process to ensure that the accounting systems and procedures meet federal, state and local requirements.
  • Prepare journal entries for schools, departments and nancial transactions originating with the county treasurer and banking institutions.
  • Maintain legal nancial records for accounting and budgeting in accordance with state mandate and good business practice.
  • Supervise and evaluate accounts payable and accounts receivable staff.
  • Prepare the year‑end nancial report (F‑196), the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA), and assist in the preparation of the annual budget (F‑195).
  • Prepare and submit 1099s/NEC forms to the IRS.
  • Serve as a resource person to district administrators in matters of business office operations and accounting procedures. Provide a wide variety of scal information.
  • Assist in providing training and technical assistance to all district accounting staff, building and director secretaries, and other district staff as appropriate.
  • Maintain, monitor and revise procedures related to all aspects of internal control. Perform internal audits.
  • Review and approve all purchase orders for accuracy and content.
  • Maintain and update the chart of accounts.
  • Assist with controlling the investment of district funds.
  • Assist the Special Education department with preparing the Safety Net application.
  • Serve as the primary contact with the Office of the Washington State Auditor.
  • Perform other accounting related duties as necessary or as assigned.
Education and Competencies
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration with an accounting emphasis.
  • Three years related experience in an accounting position preferably with a wide range of responsibilities in a “full charge” role.
  • Certied public accountant certication preferred.
  • Previous management or supervision experience preferred.
  • General knowledge of accepted accounting practices.
  • Experience in government fund accounting with Washington State public school accounting preferred.
  • Experience with data entry devices and computer reporting systems – WSIPC (Skyward) and InTouch preferred.
  • Experience with systems of internal control.
  • Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
  • Attendance and punctuality are important in this position.
