Middle School Counselor
Foothills Middle School
1.0 FTE, Non-Continuing Contract (leave replacement)
School Year ONLY
DESCRIPTION: Provide counseling services to grades 6-8. Have a flexible schedule in order to meet with parents/families as needed. Understanding the developmental stages of children at the level they are assigned to be counseled, grades 6-8. Ability to diffuse anger and mediate conflict in a constructive manner, and to deal with angry parents with a degree of understanding. Knowledge of academic tests and measurement tools used to assess ability, placement, and program plans for the student.
Willingness to be very accessible to students, parents and staff. Ability to conduct social skills training for better relationships, coping with stress, and refusal skills. Ability to work with and identify "at-risk" students and be effective in working with students of varying socio-economic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Ability to connect students and families with outside agencies. Work collaboratively on multiple teams.
Run effective small groups, classroom lessons, and some one on one support services. Lead collaborative teams to support students in their academic, behavior and social emotional needs. Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Valid Washington state Education Staff Associate certificate with counseling endorsement.
Experience with classroom, group and individual counseling preferred. Experience working with middle school aged students. Experienced in the development and implementation of the Master Schedule. Ability to work as a team player. Strong communication skills.
Experience with PBIS implementation, behavioral interventions, and social emotional support. Commitment to WSD comprehensive guidance and counseling plan. Knowledge of Special Education law, regulations, and integration needs with the school's academic program. Must pursue outlets for his/her own mental health and well-being. Ability to manage standardized testing and be familiar with school counseling. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred. Attendance and punctuality are important functions of this position.
