Multilingual Student Retention Specialist (1 position)

Position Summary: The Multilingual Student Retention Specialist will provide comprehensive and culturally competent support services designed to ensure the academic success of eligible migratory students, including Priority for Service (PFS) students as measured by meaningful academic engagement, college and career readiness, and graduation rates. The incumbent provides specific instructional and non‑instructional support to teachers, students and families and is responsible for monitoring and assisting individuals or groups of students without supervision.
The incumbent performs the full range of instructional assistant duties and responsibilities in support of college and career readiness learning experiences, comprehensive academic support services, social services and activities, including individualized post‑secondary plans, goals, and objectives, combined with applying vocationally specific experience and training to support student learning.
Works under the direct supervision of the West Side High School administration and works with Migrant Education Program Coordinator to identify and establish program goals. Actively participates in and supports the district's Migrant Education Program meetings and evening events to foster strong home‑school connections. Responsible for being familiar with school/district policies and procedures governing work and interaction with students, teachers, parents, and community members.
MajorDuties and Responsibilities
- Assist teachers in assessment tasks, curriculum implementation, student interactions, enforce safe behaviors, and enhance social growth of Migratory students in the classroom.
- Participate in data reviews to determine student services and support needs for engagement and retention.
- Work with students and families to re‑engage, maintain learning, and ultimately graduate on time.
- Provide support in determining and coordinating referrals and supports to other agencies or WSD departments as appropriate.
- Monitor academic reporting systems for early alert to students’ performance and academic progress risk, providing timely interventions for those in need.
- Prepare and implement intervention plans to work with at‑risk students.
- Assist students in the use of specific curriculum and technology software that enhances the learning experience.
- Communicate academic progress and behavior with students and parents with respect, confidentiality, consistent with staff, administrators, and school/district policies.
- Provide technical assistance to students concerning college and career planning, assessment, scholarship and financial aid research, and preparation.
- Assist students with establishing, developing, pursuing, and meeting individualized postsecondary planning, goals, and objectives.
- Maintain a caseload of up to 150 students, co‑creating a roadmap and plan of success for each.
- Handle confidential student information with tact, discretion, and in compliance with FERPA regulations.
- Discuss grades with students and assist them with strategies and plans to improve grades.
- Assist students in schoolwork, coaching them through barriers.
- Oversee student behavior and safety, intervene when students are unsafe.
- Provide instructional support and tutoring in large groups, small groups, and one‑on‑one situations.
- Document behavior and progress to assist teachers in assessing progress with education plans.
- Maintain or assist in maintaining student weekly progress reports, including tracking demographics and services into the Washington State Migrant Student Information System (MSIS).
- Perform clerical duties: making copies, operating office equipment, record keeping.
- Attend and apply appropriate training related to the job.
- Successful experience working with culturally diverse families and communities, or demonstrated commitment to engaging diverse communities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field (preferred).
- Bilingual and bicultural skills in Spanish (required).
