Highly Capable Elementary Teacher Newbery and Mission View Elementary Schools 1.0 FTE, Continuing Contract DESCRIPTION

Responsibilities of the HiCap Elementary Teaching Specialist is to provide direct services to students needing highly capable services in buildings where assigned. The HiCap Specialist will teach in smaller groups that allow for differentiated curriculum and regular association with students of similar ability, motivation, and interest. Mentor, coach, and supervise advanced curriculum and projects. Assess student progress aligned with goals for student growth.

Collaborate with district HiCap staff on a regular basis. As a member of the elementary HiCap team the HiCap Specialist will design and implement curriculum for students with advanced learning needs. Participate in the planning of district-wide culminating events for students. Utilize data to support learning for students. Participate on the District Elementary Multi-Disciplinary Selection Committee (MSC) for identification of students needing highly capable program services at assigned schools.

Provide data to the HiCap Coordinator about students served in buildings where assigned. Communicate with classroom teachers and other staff, parents and students. The HiCap Specialist will collect, review, and disseminate information about available HiCap opportunities, program options, plans and student progress to building staff, students, and parents as appropriate. Provide resources and staff development to classroom teachers and other staff regarding the needs of highly capable students, and effective teaching strategies and materials for students with advanced learning needs as appropriate.

Offer leadership in ongoing program organization, administration, and evaluation in schools where assigned. Attend job related professional development.

QUALIFICATIONS

Current and Valid Washington state certification with appropriate endorsement(s). Experience and/or training in the education of highly capable students. Bilingual preferred. Experience in developing curriculum for highly capable students and knowledge of effective differentiation strategies. Understanding of and training in PBIS, MTSS, GLAD strategies and creating trauma sensitive classrooms preferred. Demonstrated skills in collaboration, communication, technology, creativity, organization, coaching and leadership.

Ability to work as a team player. Attendance and punctuality are important functions of this job.
