The assistant controller is responsible for general accounting support and oversight of the accounts payable, accounts receivable, travel and student finance functions and ledgers. The position also includes reconciling accounts, entering journal entries, and filling in for the controller during their absence. The position reports to the controller and requires expertise in accounting. Direct reports include accounts payable, travel and student finance (cashiering) staff.
- Under direction of the controller, manage, plan and perform assigned accounting functions to support the college’s academic and ancillary programs.
- Oversee the travel and accounts payable systems for the college, providing services to the campus community and reconciling ledgers.
- Manage the student finance and cashiering operations, including service to students, overall accounts receivable and cash receipts, and reconciling ledger accounts.
- Assume responsibilities and duties of the controller during their absence, providing oversight of fiscal operations.
- Assist in developing and implementing accounting policies, procedures and training to produce results that meet audit requirements.
- Support the controller and vice president of finance and administration in the preparation of the District’s financial statements.
- Perform internal audits and update the controller and vice president for finance and administration on results.
- Reconciling State and Federal Work-Study, ensuring work authorizations are entered correctly.
- Responding to inquiries from faculty, staff, and students regarding financial matters and providing guidance on financial policies and procedures.
- Prepare, review and create journal entries as needed.
- Coach and mentor accounting personnel for job growth.
- Train and supervise direct reports on accordance with negotiated agreements.
- Maintain files and supporting documentation for all areas of responsibility in compliance with audit requirements.
- Maintain positive working relationships with college departments and staff, State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, local and federal agencies, vendors and the public.
- Serve on college committees.

Minimum Qualifications- A bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, finance, audit or a related field.
- Experience in GASB/FASB accounting principles, and reconciling ledgers and accounts.
- Five years of relevant professional experience.
- Demonstrated understanding of internal controls and separation of duties.
- Proficient with word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Word and Excel preferred).
- Or, if you do not meet one or more of qualifications listed above but have an applicable combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Accounting and/or budget work within a governmental fund structure, within one or more of the following:
- A state of Washington agency or subdivision or a public institution of higher education.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously under pressure with short deadlines and/or frequent interruptions.
- Experience with People Soft.
- Experience creating digital content (such as Word/PDF documents and web and learning management system content as appropriate to the role) in accessible formats.
- Customer Service:
Knowledge of customer service skills and best practices with ability to provide general and specialized student support with professional courtesy, empathy, and interest in positive problem solving. - Oral communication:
Speak clearly and persuasively, actively listen and take the time to understand the points being made, including asking questions as appropriate and responding to questions. - Quality:
