The Solicitor General’s Division has an opening for a Solicitor General’s Office Fellow. The Solicitor General’s Division is the division within the Attorney General’s Office responsible for United States Supreme Court practice, coordinating statewide legal issues, overseeing significant appellate matters, advising the Governor and Legislature on significant legal questions, directly representing the state in certain appellate matters, assisting other divisions within the Attorney General’s Office with other appellate matters, coordinating amicus briefs, preparing Attorney General Opinions, and writing ballot measure materials.

The attorney selected for this position will be an Assistant Attorney General and work closely with the Solicitor General and Deputy Solicitors General on a range of assignments, including researching and drafting portions of appellate briefs, Attorney General Opinions, and memoranda; serving on moot court panels; research assignments related to significant statewide legal issues; and other special projects. The primary focus of the position will be research and writing.

The Fellow would be expected to serve in this position for at least one year and possibly up to two years, with the possibility of subsequently transferring to a permanent position elsewhere in the Attorney General’s Office. The official duty station of the person hired to fill this role will have the option of being assigned to either Olympia or Seattle.

This non-permanent position is aimed at attorneys interested in gaining exposure to appellate practice. Exceptionally well qualified candidates possess excellent analytical, writing, and research skills, a demonstrated ability to juggle multiple deadlines and assignments, and a stellar academic record. Experience clerking in state or federal court is preferred but not required. The individual selected must be highly motivated, able to work independently and as a team player, and willing to devote whatever time is necessary to complete important, time-sensitive assignments.

Applicants must have graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program; and be licensed to practice law in Washington state. Applicants who meet the other stated qualifications and are actively pursuing admission by motion will also be considered. The AGO seeks applicants who are committed to public service as demonstrated by an applicant's background, talents, attitude, and enthusiasm for public law practice.

This Assistant Attorney General position is represented by the Association of Washington Assistant Attorneys General (AWAAG) / Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) AFSCME Council 28, AFL-CIO. AAG salaries are set between $82,212 and $153,996. The exact amount is set in accordance with Appendix B of the AWAAG CBA. The salary of an employee whose official duty station is Seattle would reflect 5% King County Assignment Pay per legislative action.
