Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking two Highway Maintenance Workers to support the safe and reliable operation of Washington’s transportation system. These journey-level positions perform skilled maintenance and repair work on highways, bridges, overpasses, and other transportation infrastructure to help ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. Working collaboratively with regional maintenance teams and other WSDOT work groups, these positions respond to changing operational needs while maintaining a strong focus on employee and public safety.

These roles provide an opportunity to make a direct impact on the communities WSDOT serves by helping maintain a safe, dependable, and resilient transportation system.

What to Expect

These positions perform work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors and often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time; HMW2 may work at elevated heights above 50 feet over land or water. Work may also include traversing in rough, steep, and uneven terrain. A typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days.

Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies. Rotational night shift may be required.

Responsibilities
  • Perform traffic control operations in accordance with WSDOT standards and safety policies.
  • Maintain and repair pavement, guardrails, drainage systems, signs, fences, bridges, and roadway features.
  • Remove debris, litter, vegetation, and other roadway obstructions.
  • Install and maintain highway pavement markings.
  • Operate Class A, B and C Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) equipment.
  • Perform snow and ice control and haul maintenance materials.
  • Provide general labor and equipment support to maintenance crews.
  • Maintain and perform minor repairs on vehicles, equipment, and tools.
  • Complete required reports, documentation, safety meetings, and training.
Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

  • Highway Maintenance and Equipment Operations: Demonstrated proficiency in roadway maintenance, snow and ice operations, heavy equipment operation, or equivalent work requiring similar knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Technology and Communication: Demonstrated ability to use basic computers and electronic tablets to communicate, capture, and retrieve information.
  • Growth Mindset: Demonstrated commitment to learning, growth, and developing new skills and knowledge.
  • Service-Oriented: Demonstrated willingness to take action to meet the needs of others.

In addition to the required competencies above, the following are also required:

  • A valid Class B CDL without restrictions, with an N (tanker) endorsement and with the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 12 months of hire. (WSDOT may assist with obtaining).
  • A current DOT medical card.
  • A valid Traffic Control/Flagging card or the ability to obtain within three (3) months of hire. (WSDOT may assist with obtaining).
  • Obtain and maintain valid First Aid/CPR Certification within six (6) months of hire. (WSDOT may assist with obtaining).
  • A valid CDL medical card.
