Job Summary
The Equipment Operator is responsible for the maintenance and/or construction of Regional Detention Facilities and Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4). Employee is required to perform all similar or related duties.
Essential Job Functions- Maintain regular and prompt attendance; physically present to work.
- Operate a variety of department equipment such as a tractor equipped with an ejector scraper and laser/GPS systems, backhoe, and front-end loader in the development of Regional Stormwater Detention Facilities (RDFs).
- Dig detention basins and may be required to remove trees and brush in the area.
- Perform tasks around trees and wires, cleaning debris with backhoe.
- Perform demolition work if needed.
- Ensure adherence to safety standards when operating equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Respond to emergency situations as necessary.
- Attend training sessions to maintain updates on occupational safety requirements.
- Perform routine maintenance of assigned equipment and trucks.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- One (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience.
- Current valid Class “C” driver’s license;
Class “A” or “B” commercial driver’s license preferred and insurable. - Must pass a pre‑employment background check and drug screen at the City’s expense.
- Successfully complete Emergency Management and Incident Command training within the first three months of hire.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
Knowledge of safe and effective operation of equipment and machinery such as a tractor and ejector scraper; working knowledge of public works department operations. Ability to read and interpret construction project plans, pay careful attention to details, and perform work under extreme weather conditions for long periods. Ability to interact effectively with all employees and recognize unsafe working conditions to take appropriate safety precautions.
Requires good judgment, reading, simple math calculations, and ability to withstand moderate stress.
Work requires agility and physical strength, moving on construction sites or rough terrain, frequently lifting or moving up to 60 lbs. Duties may involve intense mental concentration, hand and eye coordination, and visual attention for long periods in operating or repairing Class A vehicles or Class C hydraulic equipment.
Salary$13.00 per hour
