Summary
The registered nurse (RN, RN II, RN III) performs professional nursing activities in the care of patients to help them achieve, regain, and maintain maximum physical, emotional, and social function. The role is governed by the Nurse Practice Act, the state Administrative Code, professional nursing standards, and the policies and procedures of Rogers Memorial Hospital. The RN collaborates with the health team and the Patient Accounts department to provide patient information that ensures compliance with federal and state statutes.
Schedule:
Monday‑Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM.
- Complete initial assessments and document required information within prescribed timelines.
- Gather and analyze admission data, including patient strengths, cultural factors, discharge needs, medical status, medication history, and age‑specific concerns.
- Engage patient support systems (family, friends) in assessment and documentation.
- Act as a patient advocate: explain rights, obtain signatures on consents, protect privacy, and assist with orientation.
- Participate in planning and modifying the patient’s plan of care, reviewing data, participating in care conferences, and updating goals.
- Review laboratory data, follow up with physicians, assess fall risk, identify self‑abuse, suicidal or assaultive behaviors, and develop age‑appropriate interventions.
- Perform safe medication administration: right patient, right medication, right dose, right time, right route; maintain knowledge of medication purposes and effects; transcribe orders accurately; monitor for adverse reactions and interactions; document patient education.
- Use de‑escalation techniques for patients showing agitation; re‑evaluate safety level; identify withdrawal syndromes and neuroleptic malignant syndrome signs.
- Identify health education needs of patients/families before discharge; document interventions; organize care activities; integrate cultural and age‑specific considerations.
- Participate in continuing education and in‑service programs; report knowledge to unit staff; attend required in‑services; engage in the Performance Improvement program.
- Assist in developing and implementing unit standards of care—safety level, hazardous items, kardex, and other protocols.
- Identify unit issues and propose solutions to Clinical Services Manager; identify equipment and supply needs.
- Serve on unit‑based committees or projects; lead projects as needed.
- Carry out leadership functions in patient care, staff operations, and departmental organization.
- Assume Charge Nurse role: coordinate unit activities, lead during crises, facilitate admission process, communicate unit status, manage therapeutic milieu, schedule assignments, maintain organizational order, supervise LPN/psychiatric technician staff, and provide acuity monitoring.
- Participate in professional development: set goals with Clinical Services Manager, seek continuing education, and pursue projects based on unit needs.
- Promote department goals and hospital mission: communicate to staff, demonstrate goal achievement, maintain policies, educate new staff and interns.
- Assume compliance with Joint Commission and regulatory agency requirements; participate in in‑services and seminars to increase regulatory awareness; educate other disciplines.
- Participate in hospital committees, performance improvement meetings, and projects; demonstrate punctuality, effective communication, and a positive solution‑focused attitude.
- Conduct oneself professionally: organizational skills, positive communication, conflict resolution, attending seminars, compliance with hospital policies, courteous behavior, and professional appearance.
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) preferred; registration on state nursing board in good standing required.
- CPR certification (American Heart Association or equivalent) or required within 30 days of hire; re‑certify biannually.
- Formal training in aggressive patient management required within 60 days of hire; re‑certify annually.
- Previous psychiatric experience with children, adolescents, and adults preferred.
- May be required to hold a qualified medical professional (QMP) designation; competency evaluated at least annually.
- Employees in Child/Adolescent Day Treatment programs licensed under HFS 40 must have either training in psychiatric nursing or one year of clinical experience with these children.
