Summary
Registered nurse (RN, RN II, RN III) performs professional nursing activities in the care of patients to achieve or regain maximum physical, emotional, or social function. Role functions are governed by the Nurse Practice Act, state administrative codes, professional nursing standards, and Rogers Memorial Hospital policies.
Responsibilities- Complete initial patient assessments and document required data within prescribed time frames.
- Collect, record, and analyze admission assessment information, including patient strengths, limitations, cultural, spiritual, ethnic factors, and discharge needs.
- Advocate for patients, explain rights, obtain necessary consents, and protect patient privacy and confidentiality.
- Assist in patient orientation, unit safety procedures, gown/contraband searches, and provide unit information sensitively.
- Initiate and update treatment plans, review goals, and modify plans based on multidisciplinary assessments.
- Participate in care conferences, represent nursing care in staffing sessions, and develop patient/family–centered care plans.
- Evaluate medication orders, administer medications accurately, monitor for adverse reactions, and educate patients on medication use.
- Identify potential falls, self‑abuse, suicidality, assaultive behavior, and implement appropriate precautions and interventions.
- Document nursing assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the patient record and treatment plan.
- Lead de‑escalation techniques, use restraints, and re‑evaluate safety levels when required.
- Apply EMTALA and other regulatory requirements to admissions, transfers, and related patient care activities.
- Maintain safety and infection control standards, protect patients, visitors, and staff from environmental hazards.
- Participate in continuing education, in‑service programs, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Supervise and delegate tasks to LPN/psychiatric technician, ensuring task delegation aligns with staff qualifications.
- Contribute to unit standards of care, unit committees, and project leadership to improve unit practices.
- Engage in professional growth through continuing education, project participation, and goal achievement.
- Demonstrate effective communication, organization, and professional image in all patient and unit interactions.
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) preferred; nursing license in good standing with the State Board of Nursing.
- Registered nurse licensed by State Board of Nursing in the state of employment.
- CPR certification required within 30 days of hire, with bi‑annual re‑certification.
- Formal training in management of the aggressive patient required within 60 days of hire; annual re‑certification.
- Previous psychiatric experience with children, adolescents, and adults preferred.
- Qualified Medical Professional (QMP) designation at the discretion of the Hospital; designation evaluated and renewed annually.
- Competent to serve as a QMP, as outlined in the Medical Staff bylaws of Rogers Memorial Hospital.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and meet physical and mental demands for patient care.
