Check‑Mate Manufacturing has an opening for a Tool and Die Maker reporting to the Tooling Manager. The candidate must have a Journeyman license or completion of a formal apprenticeship program. Responsibilities include building, repairing, and maintaining dies, fixtures, and all other tooling in conformance with customer and/or company specifications per control plans. The role involves analyzing specifications, laying out metal stock, setting up and operating machine tools, and fitting and assembling parts to make and repair dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and machinists’ hand tools.
The Tool and Die Maker maintains a safe working environment by ensuring compliance with procedures and safety regulations.
- Ability to read tool and die designs and prints
- Basic shop math and trigonometry
- Proficiency with precise measuring equipment such as micrometers, calipers, gauge blocks, and dial indicators
- Ability to operate all standard tool room equipment (milling machines, drill presses, surface grinders, lathes) and set up CNC machines
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
- General knowledge of tool and die design, including tool steels and carbides (plus)
- Ability to work independently and be self‑motivated
- Ability to work without supervision and lead small teams as required
- Ability to work with appropriate outside vendors
- Ability to train and develop apprentices
- Clear communication skills with others
- High School Diploma or equivalent education, or trade school diploma program
- Journeyman Tool & Die Maker and/or completion of a 4‑year apprenticeship or advanced manufacturing certificate, followed by at least 4 years of on‑the‑job training
- 5 years’ experience in the trade, emphasizing small precision stampings from progressive dies
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both in writing and verbally (Preferred)
- Knowledge/experience with AutoCAD, Solid Works, and EDM (Plus)
