The Fairground Director of Operations & Events plays a pivotal role in shaping memorable experiences, driving economic impact, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of one of Washington County's most valued destinations.

Job Objective

The Fairground Director of Operations and Events provides leadership and direct oversight of the day-to-day operations, event execution, and long-term planning for the Washington County Fair Park & Conference Center (WCFP). This role is responsible for managing facility operations, coordinating major events including the annual Washington County Fair, supervising staff, overseeing budgets, and ensuring a high-quality experience for vendors, partners, and the community.

Working closely with the Board of Directors and Washington County, the Director will lead both strategic initiatives and hands‑on operational management to ensure the Fair Park's continued growth, sustainability, and success. This is a highly visible, hands‑on leadership role responsible for both strategic direction and on‑site execution of Fair park operations and events.

Fairground Operational Leadership and Event Execution
  • Oversee daily operations of the Fair Park facilities, ensuring efficient, safe, and customer‑focused service.
  • Lead planning, coordination, and execution of fairs, exhibits, rentals, and promotional events, including the annual Washington County Fair.
  • Maintain an active and profitable event schedule that supports community engagement and revenue goals.
  • Provide hands‑on problem‑solving and leadership during high‑volume events and urgent operational issues.
Fairground Strategic Planning and Organizational Development
  • Facilitate the development of business and strategic plans in partnership with the Board of Directors' mission.
  • Translate long‑range goals into practical operational plans and measurable outcomes.
  • Provide creative solutions and sound judgment from project conception through completion.
  • Direct facility staff and ensure strong internal communication, accountability, and performance.
  • Build, supervise, and motivate a high‑performing operations and events team.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings, trainings, and performance evaluations.
  • Ensure staffing structures meet the needs of major events and year‑round facility operations.
  • Establish and recommend operational policies for adoption by the Board of Directors.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for operational updates, staffing needs, and progress on event planning.
Fairground Financial Oversight and Resource Management
  • Develop, manage, and administer operating budgets and event‑related financial planning.
  • Oversee procurement, vendor contracts, and revenue‑generating partnerships.
  • Support grant writing and funding proposals that strengthen Fair Park programs and facilities.
  • Assist with capital improvement planning and facility project requests.
  • Develop and grow corporate and business relationships.
  • Fundraising in the form of event sponsor ships and corporate donations.
  • Recommend to the Board of Directors an annual operating and capital expenditure budget, program of work, and accountability of assignments.
  • Oversee the development and administration of the agency's facilities plan and operations.
  • Routinely inform the Board of Directors on the financial condition and progress toward achievement of the adopted objectives and goals.
  • Research, draft, and submit proposals to secure grant funding for the organization.
Qualifications and Strengths
  • 5‑8 years of experience in operations, event management, project management, marketing, or public relations.
  • Experience in fairgrounds, expo centers, convention centers, or large‑scale event venues strongly preferred.
  • A bachelor's degree in Business, Public Administration, Marketing, or a related field is preferred.
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to work hands‑on in a fast‑paced event environment. Develop and maintain effective relationships.
  • Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proven organizational, budgeting, and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills are a must.
Valuable Added Experience
  • Fair, festival, or large‑scale public event industry experience.
  • MBA, CFE (Certified Fair Executive), or related credentials.
  • Experience working with government entities or public‑private partnerships.
  • Knowledge of agriculture, exposition sales, land management, or facility operations.
  • Crisis management and communication experience.
