Northern Lights delivers locating and inspection expertise that goes beyond traditional utility location and provides 24/7 protection. The company also offers sewer imaging, inspection, and locating sewer mains/laterals using the latest technology, and performs inspection work for utility projects across the United States.
PositionSummary
We are looking for a Utility Locator to locate underground utilities based on 811 tickets per 811 dig laws and support our independent field operations with a robust support system.
Responsibilities- Locate underground utilities for clients and property owners based on 811 tickets and 811 dig laws.
- Use utility maps, as‑built civil engineering drawings, GIS information, and various pipe and electronic locating equipment.
- Utilize flags and/or paint to mark the location of underground utilities.
- Prepare reports, forms, and memos to document work completed, problems encountered, and/or resolved.
- Take pictures of located utility lines for each 811 ticket.
- Investigate and document excavations that result in damage to underground utilities.
- Record locating marks using a cell‑phone‑based app, which holds photos and enables completion of all necessary documents.
- Participate in on‑call rotation.
- At least 2 years of locator experience.
- Know best locate practices, procedures, and 811 law.
- Read and interpret utility maps and as‑built civil engineering drawings.
- Maintain cleanliness and good operating condition of all provided equipment and vehicle.
- Be able to maintain a tobacco‑free vehicle.
- Locate underground utilities using multiple methods of locating.
- Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Maintain small‑to‑medium‑sized equipment and trucks.
- Complete paperwork and documentation.
- Communicate and use interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.
- Attention to detail.
- Be able to work in all weather conditions.
- Willingness to travel (75%+).
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills.
- Pass a drug screen.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to obtain DOT physical certification.
- Must be available to work varying schedules and overtime.
