The nursing instructor at Southeastern Community College provides educational services as assigned, in accordance with general college guidelines, board policies, and administrative guidelines. The individual instructor is the key to the successful accomplishment of the nursing education program goals. The instructor is part of the Health Professions Division and reports to the Associate Dean of Nursing. His/her attitude, personality, knowledge, skills, and motivation contribute to the creation of an effective learning environment.
Familiarity with the comprehensive community college philosophy is highly desired.
The primary qualifications include meeting position and education requirements established by the college’s Quality Faculty Plan with additional requirements determined by the position held. The nursing instructor position functions under the auspices of the Iowa Board of Nursing.
Responsibilities:
Provide classroom/lab/clinical/simulation instruction and evaluation over PN and/or ADN level nursing students in a variety of nursing areas as assigned; maintain currency in all areas of the nursing curriculum; collaborate with the nursing team for development and evaluation of the nursing program; participate in faculty and other institutional meetings as directed; provide leadership and mentoring of clinical adjunct instructors in tandem with the dean and clinical coordinator.
Day, evening and/or weekend hours may be required to accommodate the schedule of students.
Functions of faculty:
- Develop, implement, and evaluate the purpose, philosophy/mission, and outcomes of the program.
- Design, implement, evaluate, and revise the curriculum as demonstrated in the program evaluation plan.
- Provide students with written policies as specified.
- Participate in academic advisement and guidance of students.
- Provide for admission, progression, and graduation of students.
- Provide for student evaluation, self-evaluation, and peer evaluation of teaching effectiveness.
- Participate in activities to ensure competency in areas of responsibility.
The term of employment is as per the Bargaining Agreement between the SCC Board of Trustees and the SCCHEA, employment contract, and relevant policies of the Board of Trustees.
This position will have an extended contract to compensate for summer assignment.
Required Qualifications- Graduate of an approved nursing program.
- Must be a licensed Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa with an active and unencumbered license.
- Master’s degree in Nursing required or making annual progress towards an advanced degree. Master’s degree or higher in Nursing Education preferred.
- Two years of experience in clinical nursing required; five years preferred.
- Two years of experience in nursing education preferred; knowledge of the course and curriculum development process, active and collaborative instructional techniques, instructional materials, as well as knowledge of the educational processes for adult learners preferred.
- Strong human relations and interpersonal skills to interact positively and effectively with diverse populations.
- Ability to use instructional technology and computer software applications to perform work duties.
- Ability to interpret policies and regulations in the performance of work duties including but not limited to Board Policies, Administrative Guidelines, and the State of Iowa administrative rules and regulations, Iowa Board of Nursing regulations, and Nursing program accreditation standards.
- Excellent communication skills (listening, speaking, writing).
- Ability to handle confidential matters with discretion and perform with a high level of personal and professional integrity and ethics.
- Must be able to work cooperatively with health officials, other agencies, faculty and students, staff, and administrators.
- Must have the ability to make effective decisions in day-to-day operations.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
