The West Burlington Independent School District is seeking a K‑6 Music Instructor for the 2024‑2025 school year. Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the instructor will develop students’ understanding and appreciation of the art of music, including listening to a wide range of musical genres, periods, and styles.
Essential Functions- Develop and administer music education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
- Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction.
- Develop balanced music programs and lessons to organize class time so that students have adequate preparation, rehearsal, and instruction.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student musical learning and progress, and modify instructional methods to fit individual student needs, including students with special needs.
- Utilize a repertoire of all types of music literature as appropriate.
- Plan, coordinate rehearsals for, and direct students in musical programs and performances outside the classroom.
- Continue to acquire professional knowledge and stay current by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
- Organize and maintain accurate and complete records for grading and reporting of all student activities, achievements, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
- Encourage parental involvement in students’ education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
- Ensure that student conduct conforms to the school’s standards and district policies, establishing and maintaining standards of behavior during practice, rehearsal, and performances.
- Coordinate with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
- Select and requisition appropriate music supplies and instrumental equipment, maintain inventory records, and ensure equipment is in good working order.
Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as directed by the Superintendent.
Equipment & TravelUse standard office equipment such as a personal computer, printer, copy machine, fax machine, and telephone. Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, including differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
- Knowledge of English grammar, word usage, spelling, literature, and other content areas taught.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and creation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to play an instrument or instruments and conduct students in playing instruments as needed.
- Ability to instruct students in singing, harmonization, and chorus.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self‑evaluation for performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others involved in the work.
- Iowa State Certification as a Music Teacher.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.
