Overview
Upward Bound Resident Assistant/Mentors:
Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, Iowa is looking for resident assistants for the summer 2026 TRiO Upward Bound residential program.
The Upward Bound Resident Assistant/Mentor will provide direct services to Upward Bound project participants. These services will be related to assisting participants in the successful completion of academic coursework and personal development activities during the intensive six-week summer Upward Bound Program.
Employment duration is June 1st – July 13th, 2026 excluding July 3rd for the holiday. Weekends are off with the exception of move-in day on Sunday, June 7th. Residence Hall life, remaining on campus, Sunday evening through Friday evening. This is a demanding and time consuming position so Resident Assistants cannot attend classes or have other part-time jobs during the employment period.
Compensation: $2,525 - $3,025 (amount dependent upon education and experience) for the duration of the employment contract (Sunday evening through Friday afternoon each week which includes one week of mandatory training). Room and board provided. Meals not provided Friday dinner through Sunday dinner.
The TRiO Upward Bound Assistant/Mentor will abide by the employment contract and relevant policies and guidelines of the Board of Trustees and TRiO Upward Bound grant.
Responsibilities- Live in the residence hall; supervise all project participants in general and in assigned group.
- Transport students to and from home and/or field trips in SCC vans as necessary.
- Participate in summer activities (both daytime and evening activities during entire program duration).
- Position is 24/7.
- Accompany and supervise students during cultural and social activities.
- Clarify, monitor, and enforce rules consistently and report concerns/incidents in a timely manner.
- Attend Resident Assistant general meetings and meet with Upward Bound personnel when necessary.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of services provided to participants.
- Work with assigned instructors in class and support educational goals.
- Lead group study sessions; including tutoring and teaching study skills.
- Provide pleasant, comfortable atmosphere conducive to maximum student growth.
- Conduct periodic room inspections.
- Take primary responsibility for students in his/her group by monitoring academic, personal and social progress and updating other staff as necessary.
- Establish and maintain a positive and respectful, mentoring relationship with participants.
- Implement and supervise a six-week schedule of recreational and social activities.
- Establish positive relationships with parents and other primary caretakers of project participants.
- Uphold duty roster responsibilities (dining hall supervision, SFS guidelines, on-call duty, hall duty, supervising evening activities, miscellaneous errands, etc.).
- Handle and/or refer student disciplinary issues, crises and personal issues to appropriate staff, and make recommendations for responses based on behavioral concerns.
- Conduct fire drills, tornado drills, building and room inspections, key and s.
- Monitor visitor access to residence hall as well as participant movement in and out of the buildings.
- Commitment to helping students to succeed in higher education.
- Maintain valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
- Work cooperatively with SCC staff.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Abide by program rules which prohibit tobacco, alcohol and illegal drug use.
- Abide by program rules which prohibit staff from fraternizing with the participants, other resident assistants, or non-Upward Bound residents in the SCC residence halls.
