West Burlington Independent School District, West Burlington Junior/Senior High – West Burlington, Iowa.

Job Description

The West Burlington Independent School District is seeking a secondary Social Studies teacher for the  school year. The district is progressive, invites innovation in the classroom, and is moving to standards-based grading. Coaching and extra duty assignments are available but not required. Candidates should have a secondary Social Studies endorsement or be able to obtain temporary certification and be willing to take additional classes to complete it.

Position

Purpose

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the teacher will develop students’ knowledge and understanding of world cultures, cultural evolution, research of social orders, and the interplay of geographical, historical, cultural, and political factors that influence societal development. The teacher will also foster appreciation of diverse cultures, languages, racial, ethnic, and religious groups, and political systems.

Essential Functions
  • Develop and administer Social Studies curriculum aligned with district goals.
  • Create lesson plans and instructional materials, integrating historical problems and challenges while maximizing instructional time.
  • Teach social studies, integrating history, geography, economics, political science, government systems, education, responsible citizenship, and humanities.
  • Develop students’ understanding of racial, ethnic, religious, and political groups, socio‑economic status, and factors affecting human rights and freedom.
  • Promote critical analysis of how media shapes public discourse and encourage comparison of alternative information sources.
  • Assess student learning continuously and modify instruction to meet individual needs, including students with special needs.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, committees, and professional development activities.
  • Maintain accurate record‑keeping, grading, and reporting per district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourage parental involvement and maintain effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensure student conduct aligns with school and district policies and foster a positive learning environment.
  • Coordinate with grade‑level and other staff as needed.
  • Select and requisition instructional supplies and maintain inventory records.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned by the Principal or superintendent.
Additional Duties

Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and central office administrators.

Equipment & Travel
  • Standard office equipment: personal computer, printer, copier, fax machine, telephone.
  • Travel to district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
  • Current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, differentiated instruction.
  • World history across sub‑topics including history, geography, sociology, economics, politics, government systems, education, citizenship, anthropology, humanities.
  • Humanity's major problems and approaches to their solutions.
  • Data systems, analysis, and action plan formulation.
  • Federal and state education laws.
  • Use of computer networks and software.
  • Organize and coordinate work.
  • Effective communication with students and parents.
  • Self‑evaluation and professional growth.
  • Establish cooperative relationships with colleagues.
Qualifications

Certification/License: Iowa State Certification as All Social Studies.

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in education or related discipline.

Experience: Prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level is preferred but not required.
