Job Description

As a Certified Nursing Assistant you will provide basic patient care under the direction of a licensed nurse, ensuring high‑quality care across a broad range of patient populations, including adult, medical/surgical, geriatric, telemetry, cardiac, neonatal, pediatric, and psychiatric patients.

  • Perform bedside shift report at the beginning and end of shift.
  • Utilize policies and procedures to keep patients safe from falls.
  • Assist in wound prevention and reduce hospital‑acquired pressure injuries.
  • Care for restrained patients and monitor for safety per licensed nurse direction.
  • Use equipment and supplies cost‑effectively.
  • Adhere to safety practices for personal protection, including infection‑control devices, lifts, gait belts, eye shields, and gloves.
  • Demonstrate accurate keyboarding proficiency and computer navigation skills.
  • Calculate intake and output using basic math.
  • Set up equipment such as oxygen, portable X‑ray machines, and overhead irrigation bottles.
  • Answer room call lights promptly and direct requests to the appropriate staff.
  • Perform skin assessments and report abnormal results to the licensed nurse in a timely manner.
  • Perform activities of daily living (ADL’s).
  • Maintain cleanliness of patient rooms and change linens as appropriate.
  • Collect and correctly label specimens (urine, feces, sputum).
  • Deliver messages, documents, and specimens.
  • Feed patients who are unable to feed themselves.
  • Observe patients, recording intake/output and vital signs; report changes to professional staff promptly.
  • Assist patients with walking, exercising, and moving in and out of bed.
  • Transport patients to treatment units using a wheelchair or stretcher.
  • Turn and reposition patients to prevent pressure ulcers.
  • Proactively monitor patients for safety and communicate any monitoring device needs.
  • Consistently use patient safety devices.
  • Document activities accurately and timely in the medical record.
  • Perform blood glucose monitoring and report abnormal results promptly.
  • Perform quality monitoring as directed (e.g., BGM).
  • Use bed/chair alarms appropriately for fall prevention.
  • Greet visitors and callers, ascertain purpose, and direct them to appropriate staff.
  • Facilitate admissions, discharges, and transfers in collaboration with other staff.
  • Operate office equipment (nurse call, fax, scanners, photocopier, computer, telephone system, telemetry).
  • Perform clerical and administrative functions including inventory management of supplies.
  • Conduct quality checks on equipment such as crash cart and transport monitor.
Qualifications
  • Completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) course (or complete within four months of hire).
  • Computer experience.
  • Health care experience within the last five years (preferred).
  • Mandatory reporting:
    Dependent Adult Abuse (mandatory reporter to Iowa Department of Human Services) within 180 days of hire;
    Child Abuse (mandatory reporter) within 180 days;
    Certified Nursing Assistant (mandatory reporter) within 120 days.
  • Emergency First Response and Choking training within 90 days of hire.
  • MOAB (Medical Officer Assessment and Briefing) within 12 months of hire.
  • Restraint training completed after hire.
  • Acute care training in Med Surg and Telemetry (as applicable).
