Overview

A Brief Overview:
Responsible for the safe transportation of mental health patients using transport vehicles including a wheelchair van and a secure car. Provides intra‑facility transports, documents patient transports, and participates in educational programs and miscellaneous duties while interacting with patients, families, and the health team.

Responsibilities
  • Assist passengers to and from the vehicle at hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, patient homes, and other locations.
  • Comfort and reassure passengers during transportation.
  • Communicate with the transport coordinator, passengers, family members, and health care workers to provide timely and safe transportation.
  • Operate wheelchair van, secure car, and other transport vehicles safely.
  • Maintain vehicles, communication equipment, and replenish first‑aid supplies.
  • Decontaminate vehicle interior after transporting patients.
  • Observe, record, and report on patient transport details.
  • Perform general cleaning duties at the base, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, trash collection, and disinfecting all areas.
  • Sit, monitor, and document as a sitter during downtime.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED (Required).
  • Valid driver’s license (e.g., Iowa Dept of Transportation Chauffeur license) upon hire.
  • 1–3 years of experience driving passenger vehicles (Preferred).
  • Knowledge of customer service standards, safety procedures, and record‑keeping.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients, families, and health care staff.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain transport vehicles.
  • Ability to decontaminate vehicles and perform general cleaning duties.
  • Ability to observe, document, and report transportation incidents accurately.
  • Will train and mentor new employees.
