Roadway Superintendent
The Roadway Superintendent is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising all field operations related to roadway and highway construction projects, with primary focus on earthwork, paving, and drainage systems. This role ensures projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with contract documents, specifications, and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities Project Supervision & Execution- Oversee daily field operations for roadway construction including clearing, grading, excavation, embankment, paving, and drainage installation.
- Coordinate sequencing of earthwork, base preparation, asphalt and/or concrete paving, and storm drainage systems.
- Interpret and enforce project plans, specifications, and construction schedules.
- Ensure proper layout, line, grade, and cross-sections are achieved per design.
- Develop and manage short- and long-term work plans in coordination with the Project Manager.
- Coordinate subcontractors, suppliers, inspectors, and internal crews.
- Monitor productivity and adjust client, equipment, and methods to meet schedule milestones.
- Participate in progress meetings with owners, engineers, and inspectors.
- Ensure workmanship meets or exceeds contract specifications and industry standards.
- Monitor compaction, material placement, paving operations, and drainage installation.
- Coordinate testing for soils, aggregates, asphalt, and concrete as required.
- Identify and resolve field issues or constructability conflicts promptly.
- Enforce company safety policies and ensure compliance with OSHA and local regulations.
- Conduct daily safety briefings and jobsite inspections.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Track quantities, production rates, and material usage.
- Assist in managing job costs and minimizing rework or delays.
- Coordinate equipment utilization and maintenance needs.
- Supervise and mentor foremen, operators, laborers, and field staff.
- Maintain clear communication with project management and stakeholders.
- Document daily activities, progress, and issues through reports and logs.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; construction management or civil engineering background preferred.
- Minimum 7–10 years of experience in roadway or heavy civil construction.
- Proven experience supervising earthwork, paving, and drainage operations on highway or large roadway projects.
- Prior superintendent or senior foreman experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of roadway construction methods, materials, and sequencing.
- Ability to read and interpret civil construction drawings and specifications.
- Knowledge of DOT standards and inspection requirements.
- Familiarity with GPS machine control, grading systems, and construction technology preferred.
- Strong leadership and team-building abilities.
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to walk uneven terrain and access all areas of an active construction site.
- Ability to work extended hours as required by project demands.
