Certified School Nurse
It is the responsibility of the School Nurse to oversee all health related policies, programs, and procedures within the school setting.
Essential duties and responsibilities include providing healthcare to students and staff within the scope of his or her professional license including first aid, consultation, and emergency care. Oversee medication administration and administration of student health plans. Oversee and perform health screenings including but not limited to vision and hearing screenings. Participate in developing plans of care of students, including as part of the IEP team.
Coordinate with other staff including teachers, administrators, food service staff, counselors, etc. for the purpose of supporting student academic, physical, and social emotional success and wellbeing. Provide health related education within the classroom setting. Create and implement procedures regarding student visits to the health office. Create and implement procedures for data collection and reporting in relation to student visits to the health office.
Follow ISBE and IDPH regulations for student exclusions and work to limit the number of students excluded from school for health reasons. Provide direction and supervision to the Administrative Assistant and the Staff Nurse within the Health Office. Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, lesson plans, substitute plans, etc.) Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
Responds to and communicates with Administration, teachers, parents, guardians, and others effectively both in writing and in person/phone and in a timely manner Complies with all Board policies, ISBE requirements, School Code, IDPH requirements and other laws and regulations.
Supervisory responsibilities include Administrative Assistant, Staff Nurse.
Education, certification, and experience include ISBE PEL with endorsement appropriate for School Nurse or meet the ISBE requirements to be a School Nurse. Master's degree in counseling or related field. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred. Strong organizational and interpersonal relationship development skills.
Skills and abilities
must include the ability to perform all of the duties and responsibilities of the position, demonstrated leadership ability, ability to communicate effectively and accurately, both orally and in writing, in English, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with both internal and external constituents, and ability to make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
