Job Position: Packer

Job Location: West Chicago, IL

Reports To: Shift Supervisor

Pay Range: $17.50 - $18.50

Shift: 12 hours – rotating schedule

Job Summary

Inspector/Packer visually inspects all products being produced, properly segregates and packages the product. The Inspector/Packer notifies the appropriate team individual(s) when quality, product food safety, or production problems arise. They ensure that only quality product is packaged into finished cases, maintain GMPs, and maintain smooth flow of product through the packaging room.

Core Job Responsibilities
  • Safety must always be a Priority One in your mind. Safety is the top priority for yourself and all others affected by your actions.
  • Adheres to all good manufacturing practices (GMP), food safety, HACCP, and SQF process requirements; rectify and/or report any non‑compliance to management or SQF practitioner immediately.
  • Ensures adequate vital supplies (e.g., tape, bagging, knockdown cases) are available; otherwise notifies Utility of requirements.
  • Reports to all scheduled shifts and attends meetings as required.
  • Constructs cartons to contain product, ensuring the proper carton is used.
  • Visually inspects product through plastic bag or in bulk prior to bagging; inspects packaging for proper print and seal; periodically opens random logs of product to perform close visual inspection; immediately notifies Production Leader or Production Equipment Operator of any identified quality defects.
  • Packs product into previously constructed cartons, ensuring correct count of bags according to product order specifications; accurately counts cups when hand‑bagging.
  • Properly seals the carton and supplies proper stamping or labels, ensuring the code date is on each carton, correctly coded and legible.
  • Sets aside defective product for correction or scrapping to ensure no defective product reaches the customer.
  • Works at an efficient and safe pace, keeping packing bins and stacking tubes clear.
  • Assists other team members as required, without being asked.
  • Maintains packaging floor, ensures smooth flow of product by responding to any product jams (bells, buzzers, lights), clearing the jam, and restarting equipment properly and safely. Repackages products mispacked due to miscounts.
  • Maintains housekeeping standards by keeping a clean work area at all times.
  • In the absence of the Inspector/Packer due to vacation, the Shift Supervisor will assign a fill‑in from another shift.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Shift Supervisor/Lead.
  • Receives a “pass” on a pre‑employment physical and drug screen.
  • Works a 12+ hour shift while standing, walking, stooping, bending, twisting, reaching, grasping and lifting throughout the shift.
  • Requires manual movement of repair parts and tools that may weigh up to 50 pounds.
  • Works indoors in a manufacturing environment that is not air‑conditioned.
  • Wears PPE including hairnet, hearing protection, and safety glasses with side guards.
  • Is able to work weekdays, weekends, and overtime as needed.

    High School Diploma or GED.
  • Skills:

    Willingness to learn.
  • Read, write, and speak English.
