Position: ASSESSMENT SPECIALIST

The purpose of this job is to perform routine-to-moderately complex technical accounting and clerical work in support of efficient and effective Tax Assessor’s Office operations, to provide professional customer service at all times, and to perform related work as assigned. This class works according to set procedures under the direct supervision of the Assessment Analyst.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:
  • Greets and assists customers at the counter; answers the telephone and provides requested information or forwards calls to appropriate staff person.
  • Provides a variety of information to the public regarding Assessor’s Office procedures, policies and methods.
  • Records changes in real estate information on computer; transfers ownership of property for tax billing purposes.
  • Proofs all deed transfers for errors; makes necessary corrections.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints and requests for assistance in areas of responsibility.
  • Prepares a variety of records, reports and correspondence as required by the department, County and other agencies.
  • Performs general clerical work as required, including but not limited to data entry, typing reports and correspondence, completing forms, copying and filing documents, sending and receiving email, processing mail, etc.
  • Completes special projects as assigned.
  • Attends training, seminars, meetings, etc., as required to maintain job knowledge and skills.

ESSENTIAL SAFETY FUNCTIONS:

DATA INVOLVEMENT: Requires summarizing, tabulating or formatting data or information in accordance with a prescribed schema or plan to facilitate the identification and extraction of useful information.

PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT: Requires giving information, guidance, or assistance to people to directly facilitate task accomplishment; may give directions or assignments to helpers or assistants.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS: Requires handling or using machines, tools or equipment requiring brief instruction or experience, such as computers for data entry, scanners, copiers, telephones or similar equipment; may service office machines, including adding paper and changing toner.

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS:

REASONING REQUIREMENTS: Requires performing semi-skilled work involving set procedures and rules but with frequent problems.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires using addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and/or calculating ratios, rates and percentages.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS: Requires reading technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires doing clerical, manual or technical tasks prescribed by standard practices but may require computation, the use of several procedures, and the use of independent judgments with obvious choices; requires normal attention for accurate results.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION:

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION: Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent. Specialized vocational training preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Requires six (6) months of related work experience. May be promoted to Lead Assessment Analyst after five (5) years of service.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Must possess a valid state driver's license.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS: Requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to ten (10) pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: The job risks exposure to no known environmental hazards.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking ability, and color perception.

JUDGMENTS AND DECISIONS:

Responsible for guiding others, requiring decisions affecting co-workers; works in a stable environment with clear and uncomplicated written/oral instructions but with some variations from the routine.
