Assists the teacher in general daily classroom activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Assists in small group pupil instruction; tutors pupils at teacher’s request.
- Assists teacher in maintaining discipline and other functions.
- Assists with set up of classroom and prepares materials for specialized instructional units.
- Handles attendance reports and related clerical functions with the teacher.
- Assists in assembling/hanging materials on bulletin boards and keeping displays current.
- Operates standard school equipment such as laminator, copier, audiovisual, etc.
- Assists in after school and academic assistance lab.
- Encourages proper student behavior in accordance with school collective commitments.
Other duties may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESSupervises students.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCEHigh school diploma or general education degree (GED), a passing score on the Work Keys Assessment Test and complete at least one of the following: at least two years of study at an accredited institution of higher education; or an associate’s degree (or higher); or an approved State or local academic assessment that measures the paraprofessional’s knowledge of and ability to assist in instruction of the appropriate level subjects (Para Pro).
LANGUAGESKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLSAbility to work with mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITYAbility to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHERSKILLS AND ABILITIES
Previous work in child care. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to push items of 50 pounds such as pushing children on a bike or moving/rearranging furniture.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision.
The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud at a standard acceptable level for this environment. The employee is continuously responsible for the safety, well‑being, and work output of students.
