Roadway Designer – West Columbia, SC

Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering, LLC (ICE) is a full‑service transportation design and consulting firm specializing in civil and transportation engineering services. The Roadway Designer will be based in West Columbia, SC and support various transportation projects in the Southeast. As a Roadway Designer, you will play a pivotal role in the design, analysis, and execution of roadway projects, ensuring adherence to SCDOT regulations and standards. Your technical expertise and familiarity with SCDOT policies and procedures will be essential in delivering safe, efficient, and sustainable roadway solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and review roadway design plans, specifications, and construction details in alignment with SCDOT standards and guidelines.
  • Conduct on‑site visits and assessments to collect pertinent data, identify project constraints, and propose effective roadway solutions.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to integrate roadway designs with other project components, such as drainage systems, utilities, and traffic control devices.
  • Prepare and present reports, drawings, and technical documents related to roadway projects, ensuring precision and clarity.
  • Utilize computer‑aided design (CAD) software and other relevant tools to create and modify roadway plans and profiles.
  • Perform engineering calculations and analyses to validate design choices and optimize roadway performance.
  • Stay updated with SCDOT policies, regulations, and industry best practices, and apply this knowledge to ensure compliance and promote innovation.
  • Assist in preparing cost estimates, project schedules, and bid packages for roadway projects.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, including government agencies, contractors, and the public, to address concerns, provide technical support, and ensure project success.
  • Conduct regular field inspections to monitor construction progress, identify issues, and ensure adherence to project specifications and safety standards.
Qualifications
  • Experience with conducting site visits, collecting data, and performing field inspections.
  • Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
  • Effective communication and presentation abilities, with the capability to convey complex technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Detail‑oriented mindset with a commitment to delivering accurate and high‑quality work.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies and quickly learn new computer skills.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in English.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Must have a current driver’s license with a safe driving record; ICE is a drug‑free workplace.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field is required.
  • Preference for an Engineering Intern License (EI) with the ability to obtain a Professional Engineer (PE) license in the state of South Carolina.
  • 0–5 years of experience desired.
  • Proficiency in Micro Station/Open Roads.
  • Strong understanding of SCDOT policies, guidelines, and design standards.
  • Sound knowledge of roadway design principles, geometric design, and transportation engineering.
