ICE is actively seeking Construction Inspectors to join our Construction Engineering & Inspection (CEI) team in Columbia, SC to support various transportation projects with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). The inspector will monitor the work of contractors to ensure compliance with contract requirements, specifications, and quality standards for transportation projects of moderate to considerable complexity. In addition to inspection responsibilities, the inspector may be required to also provide inspection/project management, under the direction of a Project Manager.
Responsibilities- Provide daily observation of construction activities and document activities on required reports/forms.
- Review construction materials for contract and specification compliance.
- Inspect roadways and structures for conformance to plans and specifications.
- Evaluate structural materials, placement of culverts, and structural operations such as foundation excavation.
- Monitor placement of pilings, reinforcing and structural steel, concrete, and backfill.
- Verify lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using survey and field engineering equipment.
- Perform accurate calculations and computations.
- Sample and test construction materials to ensure they meet the quality requirements of the project specifications.
- Review contractor submittals for conformance to project documents and specifications.
- Document and immediately report any non‑compliance actions and safety violations to your immediate supervisor.
- Record Daily Work Reports to include quantities in Site Manager and for AASHTO projects.
- Above average math and problem‑solving skills are required.
- Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in English.
- Ability to adapt to new technologies and quickly learn new computer skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
- Legal authorization to work in the US.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; ICE is a drug‑free workplace.
The following certifications help ensure that CEI technicians comply with SCDOT, AASHTO, and ASTM standards for transportation infrastructure projects. ICE provides training for inspectors to obtain the following certifications and is invested in their professional growth. Entry‑Level – Junior Inspector Experience and Certification Requirements- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate or BS in Civil Engineering is a plus.
- Minimum of one year of inspection experience is desired but not required.
- Preferred certifications (not required):
- SCDOT Asphalt Roadway Technician
- SCDOT Earthwork Drainage & Base Technician
- SCDOT Concrete Level 1 and Level 2
- ACI Concrete Field‑Testing Technician – Grade 1
This position requires minimal lifting of up to 50 pounds, sometimes on a frequent basis. The employee must be able to travel and tour work sites under adverse environmental conditions, including loud noise levels, high dust and dirt, and extreme temperatures. The employee must be able to visually examine construction materials and finished structures and work in various types of weather and field conditions, including heights, uneven terrain, highway traffic, hazards of highway construction sites, and heavy equipment.
