Position: Highway Maintenance Worker II Heavy Equipment Operator (61032014)

Job Responsibilities

At Lexington Maintenance, operates backhoe in a safe and efficient manner. Ensures proper preventative maintenance is done in accordance with SCDOT Fleet Safety and manufactures operation manual. Patches pot holes by cutting out area, adding tac and asphalt, then tamping for a good seal. Paves driveways and turning lanes using good techniques. Uses shovel and other hand tools to ensure area is level and all loose material has been removed.

Assists with the installation of driveways with and without pipe maintaining proper grade. Levels bed of ditch to lay pipe using a shovel. Ensures all joints of pipe are tight, level and to specifications. Flags traffic in low and high volume areas as instructed. Assists crews in placing traffic control devices to warn motorists of road work ahead according to SC MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices).

Operates motor grader pulling shoulders. Operates a 5 yard, 8 yard and/or a tandem truck to haul pipe, debris, signs, and equipment to and from the job site. Picks up materials from the vendor making sure all loose material is cleaned off of the truck and tarp is placed before operation begins. Performs preventive maintenance on the truck and keeps record of the same.

Cuts site areas by hand using axe, chain saw and sling blade. Cut trees that are blocking the view or dead and hazardous to the public. Trims limbs overhanging the roadway. Assists with emergencies and inclement weather operations, may include working extended hours (12 hour shifts). Operates heavy equipment during hazardous weather.

Qualifications

One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Demands
  • Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
  • Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
Schedule

May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
