Description
The Sterile Processing Tech I is responsible for building and coordinating instruments and case carts between the Operating Room, Ancillary departments, and Sterile Processing. The role coordinates case carts and add‑ons, serves as the contact person in Sterile Processing for each OR service, and maintains direct communication with physicians, nurses, and scrub techs. Responsibilities include cleaning, decontaminating, preparing, assembling, and sterilizing surgical instrumentation and related equipment used by surgical services and other clinical departments.

EssentialKey Job Responsibilities
- Consistently inspect instruments for sharpness, deterioration, alignment, and cleanliness; inspect serration and cannulations according to policy.
- Handle instruments carefully, identifying heat‑sensitive and delicate items to prevent damage.
- Check the condition of instrument containers prior to use.
- Ensure appropriate sterilization indicators and filters are placed in instrument pans before sterilization.
- Follow the specified checklist when assembling instrument sets/trays.
- Label and initial instrument sets and equipment accurately, legibly, and in a timely manner.
- Ensure instrument sets are complete before sterilization; record missing tag items that are not replaced.
- Keep conveyors unloaded and clear of trays.
- Be knowledgeable about the basic use of surgical instruments.
- Process workloads (case carts, power equipment, decontaminating equipment, scopes, etc.) and determine cleaning/cleaning priorities.
- Follow cleaning procedures per manufacturer’s instructions.
- Demonstrate knowledge in identifying surgical instrumentation.
- Understand and practice basic aseptic principles.
- Adhere to guidelines for decontamination and loading washers as outlined by policy and procedure.
- Understand and operate sterilizers according to manufacturer’s recommendations, maintaining proficiency in all sterilization methods used at SVIMC.
- Load sterilizers promptly and correctly.
- Check printouts at the start, during, and at the end of the sterilization cycle to ensure proper function.
- Perform daily suitable sterilizer testing per manufacturer’s instructions (e.g., Bowie-Dick, biological 3M Attest).
- Keep accurate and legible records of all sterilizer test results.
- Prepare cleaning solutions accurately and maintain an adequate level of cleaner in the washer.
- Comply with infection control policies and procedures, including hand washing and containment of infectious agents/materials.
- Attend in‑service programs and comply with safety guidelines, fire safety rules, hazard communications, and emergency codes and procedures.
- Operate all equipment and carts with care; maintain clean sinks.
- Keep sterilizer drains free of debris and cleaned daily.

Minimum Qualifications- Required
Education:
High School diploma, GED, Metropolitan Test, or equivalent. - Required Licensure and
Certifications:
Proof of completion of mandatory reporter abuse training specific to the population served within three (3) months of hire. - Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Knowledge of surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment.
