Experience
  • 5–10 years in Construction Management or Civil Engineering (required)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Define and quantify scope of work and prepare comprehensive conceptual, budgetary, and construction cost estimates for projects
  • Draft formal letters and other written communication to customers/owners
  • Ensure pricing of materials and subcontracts is completed in a timely and accurate manner for assigned projects
  • Maintain involvement in the change order process
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies
  • Maintain involvement in uncovering sales opportunities with prospective and existing customers
  • Perform light marketing and business development responsibilities to generate new business opportunities
  • Accurately organize take-offs, bid items, estimate set‑up sheets, quotes, and subcontractor comparisons
  • Prepare estimates by calculating various statistical data such as quantity take-offs, material price lists, labor costs per man‑hour, and equipment costs, and apply them to complete scope of work
  • Provide assistance to the project manager throughout the project
  • Resolve cost discrepancies by collecting and analyzing information
  • Review design options and recommend the best solution based on cost, engineering quality, or availability of materials when necessary
  • Review/research historical data (purchase orders, subcontracts, productivity analysis reports, etc.) and compile summary reports to develop guidelines and precedents for future estimates
  • Apply bid strategies (measured by experience/examples of work)
  • Develop and maintain relationships with clients and grow existing relationships
  • Estimate projects with high complexity, generally up to $10 million
  • Understand the concept of conceptual design‑build estimates
  • Create preliminary CPM schedules
  • Have moderate knowledge of local and regional markets, market pricing, and the volume of direct competitors’ work on hand
  • Mentor Estimator Level 1 as well as PEs and interns
  • Negotiate with and relay desired scope of work and deadlines to subcontractors and material suppliers
  • Estimate up to five estimates as a lead estimator and up to five estimates indirectly as a mentor
  • Plan for safety within estimate build‑up, addressing access, fall protection, costs, quantities of PPE, special training or certification requirements, etc.
  • Demonstrate ability to develop complex technical proposals, including scope, clarifications, pricing development, and sales strategy incorporation
  • Read contract specifications and requirements
  • Read plans and blueprints
  • Evaluate, quantify, and filter/capture specification requirements of moderate complexity within the estimate
  • Negotiate basic contract/subcontract terms and conditions
  • Evaluate risk and loss exposure on projects estimated
  • Take a lead role in developing estimates and mentor other estimators (Level
    1)
